7.   Luis Robert Jr.: Biggest gamble on the trade market

The White Sox will definitely trade ace Garrett Crochet this winter, but before they move him, they’d love to unload Robert.

Robert, 27, is a huge talent that prompted the White Sox to give him a six-year, $50 million contract five years ago, but he has never lived up to the hype.

He simply can’t stay healthy. Robert has played more than 100 games in just one of his five seasons, and now will be earning $15 million in sixth and final season.

Yet, if you gamble on Robert, and win, you’ll have the option of picking up his club option of $20 million in 2026 and again in 2027.

“The guy is certainly intriguing," one GM said, “but they’ve got a really high price tag on him. You’ve got to hope he finally stays healthy and can be the player everyone envisioned all along. But the White Sox are acting like he’s some big star center fielder and are asking for your top prospects."

I do not see Robert getting traded, as it would likely mean they sold low on him

Sox are better off keeping him and hoping that he rebuilds his trade value

They're not picking up his option so he's essentially on a 1 yr deal.  If he gets hurt (again) in april or may they get nothing.  They have to unload him now.

Trading Robert while his value is arguably at its lowest would be a bad move

I doubt the offers would be all that good right now, why settle? If he has a solid first half he could be an attractiove deadline trade piece

Wow.  I understand the risk of Robert getting injured or tanking again in the first half.  Then you are facing a $20 million dollar option for 2026.  But is there no end to this team’s cheapness?  Their guaranteed payroll for 2025 is at like $66 million right now.  Selling him low doesn’t do much for this team either.

Huh? $20M is a fair price even if Robert is basically what he is.  He's an absolute bargain if he's 3-5 WAR player.

Agreed

I don't see why they would not consider picking up that option. If he is healthy that is a really reasonable price

Seems to be a thing with Getz.  We did the same thing with Cease.

Robert played in 100 games last season and produced 0.5 fWAR. I don’t think it’s fair to say that it’s a certainty $20M is a bargain price for him in 2026/2027 as long as he stays healthy. There are legitimate performance concerns after the season he just had and he’s not getting any younger.

Unless they pivot on their asking price, Robert will be with the Sox next year. Hope I’m wrong and they get a haul though.

It will be a good case study in Jerry’s #1 motivating factor this offseason. I think it’s clear that he’s looking to shed significant payroll (A’s style) as first priority even if that means accepting diminished returns for remaining veteran assets. Therefore, I think Robert gets moved even if the return is relatively weak.

Sox waited too long on Robert. Dude should have been traded this time last year if not before.

Easier said than done...you might have gotten a real strong return for Robert last offseason, but a return of 2 top prospects would seem disappointing compared to what he was potentially worth when he had 4 years of control remaining. Did we really want to give a big discount on Robert last year?

Sure, but we don’t have to pick up the option for another year, so why not wait and see what his first half looks like?  There is zero reason to dump him now and this idea that we wouldn’t pick up a $20M option if he put up say a 5 win season because we think he might be “Moncada 2.0” is crazy.  Let’s see how does with a new coaching staff and Fuller in place.  I’d rather get nothing for him after the upcoming season than rush to trade him for scraps right now.

I need Christ Getz in my card game.  He'd fold every time.

No leverage...terrible trade, you're just running a yard sale to dump potential future salary hits to payroll in an attempt to strip the roster down to the bones.

Then getting guys like a Bohm or Lucy back in return?

Why?  Bohm plays third...and that's Montgomery's likeliest landing spot and one that Ramos plays as well.

So just add cheaper vets that we may or may not be able to flip and or watch them go into FA with no return if you put them on a 100 loss team as happened almost all of the so called studs on the roster like Jimenez Moncada and Anderson?

Benintendi also couldn't handle playing on a historically terrible team until his pride finally kicked in the last 2-3 months of 2024.

Why would guys like Lux and Bohm suddenly excel on the Sox, untethered from their previous WS-contending teams?

Gives me little hope we'd ever sign a young player to an early extension again...let alone a position player here, unless he's not Latin American?

So no pitcher extensions...they might go the way of Danks, and no risk taking with position players either.

What the hell is that vision for success when it seems predicted more on fear of failure than anything else?

So just waste the money one Vaughn Lux Bohm at a time...then start over every 2-3 years with another rebuild/retooling?

Madness.
