White Sox asking for "top prospects" for Robert

This would be a fantastic return for the Sox. I highly doubt they get this much for Robert but I’d love it.

Teams at the 2023 deadline were willing to pay a "maybe this player will improve away from the White Sox" bonus, so here's hoping.

They're viewing Robert more highly than I think we all are.. That's good.

And strange, lol.  Do the Reds have a lot of players that have bounceback seasons or something?  Most fans would be saying they should get Robert for a prospect out of their top 10.

Um, those were lateral moves, arguably downgrades, because the two guys previously in those roles (OF - Santander, backup C - McCann) left for free agency. His roster is getting more expensive, indeed, but he has done nothing to improve the roster that finished 40-41 in the second half of 2024 and got swept out of the playoffs by the Royals.

I’m not disagreeing with you.  My point is that it’s strange Elias threw any money at Tyler O’Neill and Gary Sanchez rather than just stick with Heston Kjerstad in the outfield and René Pinto at backup catcher.  Find a cheaper DH against lefties (Mayo/Basallo).  Use that $58 million toward a starting pitcher.  Don’t waste those millions on positions you can already replace with your own farm system.

Coupe of interesting quotes from the Reds board:

”I’d be fine giving up one of Collier/Arroyo/Petty and one of Lewis/Stafura if that’s what it takes.”

”White Sox got an absolute haul for Crochet, I'm glad we didn't do anything at that price. Fortunately they didn't get a premier SS or SP, so the Arroyo/Petty offer should still be enticing for them.”

”After seeing the Crochet deal, I think the Reds would have to part with two of their top 10 prospects to get Roberts, Jr.”

”Id take Burns and Duno off the table. Pick any 2 prospects you want and I'll include Marte as a 3rd piece.”

“Arroyo and Petty is a fair offer for Robert Jr IMO. One top 100 guy and another who will be there with a good start to 2025. Both are still really young at 21 and would fit the White Sox window when they are MLB ready in a year or two. If they expect more than that(like Lowder and Collier) they are going to be disappointed.”

I'd be absolutely floored if they got BOTH Arroyo and Petty for Robert.

He is doing what Hahn would do. Sign 5 bad players instead of 1 good player.

I will say this, if you can trade Robert to the Reds for a solid prospect package, you’re down to about $50M in payroll.  That allows you to do some creative stuff via trade or free agency.

I’d go use those saving and sign Jeff Hoffman.  FG has him getting 3/$30M while MLBTR projects 4/$44M.  I would split the difference and offer 3/$39M with an opt-out after year 2.  However, the goal here would be to convert him back to a SP and hopefully turn him into a high-end trade asset.  If that experience were to fail, then I’d put him into the closer role ahead of the deadline and still hope to cash in.  It would be a small gamble, but I think one worth taking.

Or take on some albatross contract (Tijuan Walker) and receive a prospect in return

Yeah the only problem is I don't see these kind of moves happening with Jerry around.

Jordan Montgomery is another guy I would like to see salary dumped with a prospect attached to us. If he pitches good, he can opt out after a year and you can offer a QO. Would check the box of having a lefty starter, veteran guy on a young staff. Plus, the D-Backs owner bashed him. Probably very available haha

Reds have made a lot of strange moves in recent years

Do they even need 2 OFs?

If it’s a case where they actively want Walker off the roster, and where Getz could leverage it, it would be a more a question if they could use him. If Getz received an offer he liked, he could say that offer is comparable to others I like, but i’ll pull the trigger if you do this. Its not the greatest fit outside of relatively even salaries, but if they don’t want to play Castellanos every day anymore, maybe he could fit as 4th OFer. Seems like Castellanos reaching that stage

Sox are going to have to get creative the next couple seasons to improve for the future

Shrewd signings, taking on a bad contract for prospect return, trades, draft, etc

He already had a QO attached so can't again.. But I like this idea regardless. Flip candidate + good prospect back.

He didn't actually. He was traded during the season before he was a free agent so he wasn't eligible to receive one. It's part of why I liked the idea of signing him a year ago as well to a 1 year/high AAV deal.

I feel like he would be a decent buy low, bounce back candidate, especially if you can get something interesting along with him. Would have the benefit of a regular Spring Training as well instead of signing late into March.

Last year at this time, the FO said that they wanted to "build around" Robert.

Pollock and Mazara and Encarnacion, etc etc were bad players.

O'Neill and Sanchez are good players.

That said, Baltimore needs pitching and if they don't want to pay for it, should have been in on Crochet harder than they were.
