White Sox asking for "top prospects" for Robert

If the best you can do for him right now is a 30 year old reliever, then yes hold onto him. If you could get an offer like the hypothetical Mets one we were talking about yesterday, taking that makes the White Sox deeper and removes a lot of downside risk on Robert.

Trading a guy who was a star up to last season for a post-hype prospect and a 45 FV kid who projects to be a utility guy in the majors makes us deeper?

Just for fun, I think everyone should predict Robert’s fWAR for the upcoming season. No ban bets. No monetary bets. Just a fun prediction so that we can see who is closest. Obviously everyone is welcome to predict, but I’m curious to hear from @JUSTgottaBELIEVE, @Chicago White Sox, @Balta1701, @southsider2k5, and @Look at Ray Ray Run.

It’s definitely a tough thing to predict, given his injury history, inconsistency, and the unknown of which team or teams he will play for, but that’s what will make it fun. Who wants to go first?

I will say 3.4 wins.  My assumption is he falls off slightly from his past 4.75 win pace due to a lack of protection causing him to do too much.  So if healthy, I’d assume he’s a 4.0 win player next year.  However, I’ll assume some minor injuries and discount his production by 15% to cover games missed.

Sure — 2.4 fWAR for me

Here's where you and I disagree - I think he was an oft-injured player most of his career. That's how I describe his 2021 and 2022. He was a star in 2023, until he was injured. He was oft-injured in 2024, and for the first time - really bad at baseball.

To put this in another view, in hindsight, if the White Sox had traded Moncada for those 2 level of players in 2022, would that make the White Sox better today? I would say yes. And fwiw, the utility guy also stole 40 bases last year, so there's some other skill to that player too.

This is a great question actually, because my answer is literally "I don't have a F***ing clue and I'd rather go have some whiskey".

Worse yet, we could easily have this discussion at the all star break about his 2nd half, and about his 2026 numbers next offseason, and all we're going to do is make me want better quality whiskey. In 4 seasons he has 1 season of 4.9 fWAR, 1 season of 3.5 fWAR, 1 season of 2.2 fWAR, and 1 season of 0.5 fWAR. How the bloody hell do you project that?

Feels like projecting Rodon as a Sox pitcher...was 2021 or his contracts from 2022-24 worth the bad long stretch it took to get there?

It appears the Astros are still planning to compete. Their outfield is complete trash right now.

Give me Smith + Leon + Whitcomb and I’m calling it a day.

Houston’s system is so bad, the only guy worth trading for is the guy they just got. Leon and Whitcomb are DFA candidates the moment they hit the Sox system Ala Corey Julks. I could see trading Robert for Cam Smith, though. I wouldn’t prefer it, but I could see it.

Me. I'm constantly too sunny side up, so I say Luis Robert will put up around 3.5 fWAR for all of 2025.

If he gets traded 5.  If he doesn't 2.

That’s what makes it so fun. It’s tough to predict. Man up and make a prediction! Don’t worry about being wrong. I’ve been wrong with predictions more times than I can count.

I think if this trade was offered, it would’ve been accepted yesterday.  You get an excellent 3B prospect and a lefty CF who just turned 24, even though his stock has been down the past couple years.  He still has the speed to play CF and maybe he can do enough other things (play good defense, hit some dingers, and steal bases) to make up for his weaker overall bat (low AVG and OBP).

”Trade Proposal: Luis Robert for infielder Cam Smith (#73 overall prospect in MLB) and outfielder Jacob Melton (Astros #2 prospect)”

I wrote this, thanks for sharing.

It’s a tough situation because I feel Robert is a really good fit for Houston given their outfield right now, but their farm is just so bad. Smith is a non-negotiable for me. I was debating between Melton and Brice Matthews as the second piece. I went Melton because he is a left handed hitting outfielder.

Astros fans replied to me and said it’s too much to give up. I figured that would be their reply. They absolutely need to do something about their outfield though. It’s atrocious.

If Smith is involved, the Sox aren’t get much else. Like the trade I proposed earlier in this thread.

It would be 1 year of Tucker for 3 years of Robert. Not a horrible trade.

1 year of Tucker and Melton for 3 years of Robert, 3 of Paredes (who I think is a great fit in that park), and 5 years of a possible mid/back-end starter Hayden Wesneski. Plus, didn’t Houston have interest in Robert the last couple years?

If they did it wasn’t worth talking about because until his terrible 2024 brought his value down they had no where near the type of talent in their system it would take to get him.

This is basically my logic. Tucker > Robert obviously but the years of control are a big factor here. They also have a big need in the outfield. Just wish they had a better system.
