Jerry might sign a 30 mil per year player.  I said might.  He is not signing a 30 million dollar per year player for 10 years.  Our best path is to spend the money on as many GOOD  players as 200 million will allow.  Sorry...I'm a realist.

Unfortunately, that approach doesn’t work great in free agency as you will be restricted B & C tier free agents with much lower margin of error when it comes to natural regression.

So am I but I'm still going to call out the stupidity.  The market is the market.

If I remember correctly, the Sox made Dick Allen the highest paid player

in baseball in 1972. 3 years at 235,000 a year.

It was after the 72 season:

February 27, 1973 - Coming off of his 1972 M.V.P. season, Dick Allen signed a three-year, $750,000 contract with the White Sox, making him the highest-paid player in baseball. While contract details for early baseball are sketchy, this is believed to be the first time a White Sox player had been the highest-paid in the game. Allen earned his deal by leading the A.L. in homers (37), RBIs (113), on-base percentage (.420), slugging percentage (.603) and OPS (1.023).

It would be 24 years before the White Sox would boast the highest-paid player in the game again, when Albert Belle signed a deal that paid him $11 million for the 1997 season.

At this rate, before too long there will be a player with enough money to build a new ballpark for Jerry Reinsdorf.

Maybe...but he won't be one of Jerry's players.

I don’t think we ever made a real offer.  And the rumor is he really wanted to sign with us.  We 100% blew a gifted opportunity and it forever changed my life.

I honestly don’t think there was ever a serious chance that JR would have signed Machado or Harper. No way in hell he’ll ever give a player that much money. It was all a pipe dream.

I've also heard this from people connected to the negotiations.

It was all a show for the fans.  Hey look, we tried!  But darn, those dastardly Padres and Phillies swooped in and signed them both.  It wasn’t our fault…

100% was not a show, at least not Machado.  They got cocky and thought they could get him at their terms because of how the market was playing out.  What they failed to realize was by slow playing they allowed a new team to enter the bidding last minute and quickly get a deal done.  It was just terrible process and lead to a terrible outcome.

They were $50 million guaranteed short.  They never matched the Padres offer.  Fake news.

Interesting thought line.

I can't imagine a pitcher getting this kind of money.

As great as Henderson is, his first full season was when he was 22, not 19. He just turned 26, whereas Henderson will turn 28 during his first year after free agency, for about 2.5 years older at free agency. Maybe inflation wins that fight, but maybe the fact that he's older limits the total money.

This is just it.  You are going to see a much higher success rate when you are buying from the BMW bin versus the Ford bin for players.
