Balta1701 Posted yesterday at 02:49 AM Share Posted yesterday at 02:49 AM Quote Most probably haven't heard of the proposal for a "Golden At-Bat," but the basic concept is that a team could choose one at-bat in every game to use its best hitter regardless of where they are in the lineup. So if, say the New York Yankees had the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, they could bring Aaron Judge to the plate even if it wasn't his turn in the order. It would be a one-time replacement, not a substitution like a pinch hitter.
Look at Ray Ray Run Posted yesterday at 03:06 AM Share Posted yesterday at 03:06 AM I don't hate everything Manfred has proposed like everyone here, but this is the dumbest thing I've heard floated in all the rule change conversations. 10 1
Quin Posted yesterday at 03:08 AM Share Posted yesterday at 03:08 AM I hate this, but if they're gonna do it, make it risky: Golden batter outs are two outs (and they can carryover to the next inning or some nonsense). Skip Bananaball. Go full Blernsball. 1 3

Timmy U Posted yesterday at 03:44 AM Share Posted yesterday at 03:44 AM This is a horrible idea and not just because last year’s golden bat for the Sox would have been Paul DeJong. 5
Balta1701 Posted yesterday at 03:46 AM Author Share Posted yesterday at 03:46 AM I can totally see LaRussa sending a .100 hitting Leury Garcia up for a bunch of these if this rule existed in 2022. 1
Chisoxfn Posted yesterday at 04:01 AM Share Posted yesterday at 04:01 AM If nothing else it’s an interesting concept. Maximize more at bats for the stars of the game in big time situations. While at first glance I don’t like it - I get the concept.

caulfield12 Posted yesterday at 04:25 AM Share Posted yesterday at 04:25 AM Teams that lost 100+ games in the previous season should get 2 Golden Bats per game. Almost like they're trying to turn it into an e-sport to appeal to young people. Everyone over 40 or 50 would absolutely hate the idea. Traditionalists/purists. zisk Posted yesterday at 04:29 AM Share Posted yesterday at 04:29 AM They could make every AB the Sox get a "golden" next year. We still couldn't win 70 games.
Bob Sacamano Posted yesterday at 04:31 AM Share Posted yesterday at 04:31 AM Would anyone on base be excluded for use? I would assume so.
superchops70 Posted yesterday at 04:43 AM Share Posted yesterday at 04:43 AM So if Judge strikes out with bases loaded and one out, you just turn around and have him bat again? What if golden hitter is still on base when his actual spot in order comes up? This would be ridiculously stupid

Quin Posted yesterday at 06:36 AM Share Posted yesterday at 06:36 AM I've decided how I want this implemented. - You can use the Golden Batter after the 7th inning. - Counts as 2 outs (can carry over if you already have 2 outs) - Opponent can sub in a pitcher, even if it breaks the 3-batter minimum. - If the Golden Batter hits a home run, it becomes a home run derby.
greg775 Posted yesterday at 06:57 AM Share Posted yesterday at 06:57 AM I don't like it much at all. In actuality, you'd probably save the Golden At Bat to the 8th or 9th inning of a game. In the ninth there'd be no reason to not use your Golden At Bat because there's no reason to save it. So let's say Sox are trailing 2-1 and bases are loaded with two out in the ninth. Our manager goes with Luis Robert instead of say, Vargas. That'd be exciting, sure. But there has to be a penalty like somebody said if the Golden Batter fails. Maybe a team mascot could race out of the dugout and smash a pie in Robert's face. The organist could play the theme from the Three Stooges. I dunno. I guess I could live with the rule. The example in the article was dumb, using Aaron Judge as an example. He was pretty lousy most of the playoffs/Series. He wouldn't be much of a Golden At Bat guy. Who would the Sox go-to “Golden at bat” hitter even be once Luis Robert is traded? Imagine Andrew Vaughn getting even more at bats in key situations? hogan873
When I saw this on X, I thought for sure it was satire. This is dumb and gimmicky. Which means they will probably implement it. Maybe the only way this works is to have stipulations attached like others have mentioned.
