Ah, still. Crochet, Fried, the above pillaging and Burnes departure.

Ironically, it looks like a trade for Dylan Cease may be their best hope.

No, no and no...Cease and King are the only truly reliable members of the SD rotation at this point in time.  Although with their stll bloated payroll and Darvish on the books for 2025, they have to be all in for at least one more year before reassessing.

Ok? I know you love the Padres, but Cease is still on the trade market.

"It’s for that reason Lin reports the club would seek “multiple controllable players,” including “one or more” starting pitchers. If San Diego were unable to secure enough rotation help from a Cease trade, Lin adds, then they would likely look to flip those players to land other (controllable) rotation pieces."

It won't be until the trade deadline because the likelihood of a massive over pay right now isn't that high.  There's no way Boras/Cease sign an early extension but they can't give up on the season this early.

Do you really think Elias is suddenly going to give up Mayo or Basallo for Cease?   And a catcher is less of  a need for them, nor do they need a 3B...so Mayo would provide less surplus value at 1B.

Rumor is Triston Casas for Luis Castillo.

Breslow is trying to please both of his constituencies here. He has to keep FSG, Henry and Kennedy happy with lower payrolls, but he also has to keep the fanbase from rioting by adding multiple quality SPers, so they aren't gonna spend money but they will spend prospects and non-essential roster pieces.

If Q is coming back does this mean they are pretty much ready to ship Robert or Beni out so as to keep the payroll relatively neutral?

I think trading Robert is a priority, as well as moving Benintendi's salary. I would like to see more Robert smoke, tho.
