Dick Allen HOF

Dick Allen

Recommended Posts

I regret that Dick wasn't here with us to share this, but maybe somewhere, somehow, he knows.

This was long overdue to a great player.

Now the Hall has to respect Dick's wishes as he told Paul Sullivan of the Tribune in one of his last interviews that he wanted the Sox logo on his cap on his plaque.

Dave "We Are Family" Parker of Pirates 1979 fame gets in as well...part of the Stargell/Chuck Tanner-led team that shocked the baseball world against BALT.

I remember pretty distinctly wanting to get his 1974 Topps rookie card when I started collecting in the 1980's.

Finally, the Sox organization and Allyn Family get some deserved kudos/praise.   But not much for JR here in terms of a spotlight to bask in.

Dick Allen was a good, sometimes excellent player. He was no Hall of Famer. It seems politically motivated to me.

Please explain the politics.

At 21 years old Dick had to play minor league ball in the Jim Crow South during the Civil Rights Movement.  Then he was totally mistreated by the press in Philadelphia which led to some of the fans turning on him.

I know this is not what you are asking but I wanted to point out the real politics that had the biggest impact on Allen's life. The baseball politics and maneuvering of getting into the HoF is a talking point in itself.
