GreenSox
The Sox have several players that they really need to audition in right field. I can’t see the point of signing marginal veterans like this. 1

Rick Hahn/Jeremy Haber????...neither are even working in professional baseball, at the moment. Unless the big supporter is Marco Paddy, who's also currently out of a job...two years after winning the "International Scout of the Year" Award in 2022. Well, apparently they weren't amused by his comparisons to slavery/indentured servitude. At this point, blocking someone from joining one of the worst teams in baseball history, kind of seems like a form of inhumane cruelty. Or maybe it's actually a form of kindness? He was decent last season with the Cubs and he wasn’t moved at the deadline for any sort of return when the Cubs were selling assets. That should really be the only goal of the Sox making one-year veteran signings. Otherwise, play Colas and the younger bums that Getz acquired last year. Colas probably isn't getting his shot because he's of questionable character as much as his inability to learn fundamentals. Maybe see if Brewers will take Colas for that left handed Cuban 1st baseman they have who does the splits stretching for throws, 6'6" 250lb Ernesto Martinez , Jr who is a very good fielder and athletic enough to steal 20 bases in AA but he's 25 and just resigned with the Brewers with an invite to spring training. They call him " El espectaculo". Colas probably has more upside but he does need out of the organization with Getz putting so much emphasis on good personalities. Martinez supposedly fits that description. It wouldn't hurt the Sox to have an excellent defensive 1st baseman who can run if they can get him to tap into his power more. He's likely a nobody but at this point so is Colas. Martinez although in AA seems closer to the majors with the Brewers than Colas is with the Sox. https://www.mlb.com/news/ernesto-martinez-jr-non-roster-invitee-brewers-2025-spring-training
greg775
Are Tauchmann and Slater any good? I don't see any reason to think they'll help the Sox win games. I would say Beni is two times the player/hitter of either of those guys.

Slater's down year last year apparently is part concussion related but he has had good years. It's about time the Sox do a Tampa approach and straight platoon RF for a whole year. I'd quibble with the bolded a little bit. I don't see it, why'd they re-sign Clevinger? Signing him once, maybe you get the benefit of the doubt (they knew), but twice? and he makes like one start? hmm. It actually seems to contradict what I thought was a well-established policy, I feel like we were always whining that the Sox/Bulls wouldn't go after knuckleheads with star power, then they go out and sign Clev twice. He's not even good. You could say something similar about Josh Giddey, regardless of whether or not the allegations against him are true. He's radioactive, OKC wasn't re-signing him and other teams didn't seem interested in trading for him, despite being pretty talented and young. Seems to me that the Reinsdorf teams had a change in ethics and it didn't even help the teams win games, actually they're as bad as ever. I bet we're thinking about if Deshaun Watson can hit a curveball.

It is the fact that they have been a part of my life since I was five years old. You don't just throw that away. As a Sox historian I've had the chance to meet a lot of members of the Sox family over the years, interview many of the same people, get to hear the stories and such. That's important. Especially now with things looking so dismal. And I'm contributing from that perspective, wrote two chapters for Dr. Fletcher's next book for example. And I am pulling back in many ways, I used to literally not go to bed until all the West Coast games were over (I was in TV and usually didn't have to get to work the next day until around noon) because the Sox were usually involved in a pennant race, I'd get upset over a blown game in the 9th inning, sometimes even have a hard time sleeping. Those things either I don't do anymore or it just doesn't bother me. I know this franchise is going to lose 100+ games, and until new ownership arrives there's nothing I can do about it. So I resign myself to that reality and hope to be around to see better days.

I came to the park very early to watch BP and infield. Very few folks were there and I saw him coming in and going up to the press box. I stopped him and we talked, told him I wanted to get into broadcasting. He gave me his address and we stayed in touch all through college. Yes he could be a jerk and he certainly had a big ego. But he always treated me well so I have no complaints. This is from my interview with J.C. Martin: ML: After you retired you worked in the Sox TV booth with Harry Carey and Bill Mercer. Did you enjoy that experience? JCM: "Not really. I didn’t really fit in with Harry. He didn’t want to work with me. We didn’t hit it off at all. I wasn’t used to working with a guy that had that kind of authority and Harry used that against me. I was only there for one year. Now Bill Mercer was a great guy, he helped me out a lot. If I had Bill when I started out, I think I’d have been a lot better and things would have worked out. Harry just left me out to dry. I’ll give you an example, we were in Milwaukee doing a game and the Brewers had a pre-game activity which saw the Milwaukee wives playing a game before the regularly scheduled one. That game caused the regular game to start late. Harry opened the telecast and then just left the booth. He left me there by myself for it must have been 15-20 minutes." My dad was Freddie's closest business partner at the Board of Trade so we always had the best seats for season tickets when I was in high school. Made me popular as I'd take 3 friends often, sometimes two then we'd sell the other two tix and have good food money for the game. My dad elected to sit with work buddies in the box and get drunk so I'd often get all four tickets. Fifth row to the left of home plate just past the netting. Harry was great to fans as he walked by to get back to the press box but my dad and Freddie didn't like him for some reason. I know they closed the Bard's room many nights though Harry liked to go hit Rush Street more as the mayor of Rush Street. I remember as a fan you could give the guards a note that u were at the game and Harry would read it on the air. Not sure if he still did that as Cub announcer. He'd say "Joe Slabodnik and Tom Johnson of Naperville are at the game." You prolly recall he'd read requests like that from any fan. An announcer guy here at KU also didn't like Harry. Guess it was ego. I know as a fan I loved him. Edited Tuesday at 02:27 AM by greg775

Plus he obviously did something to piss off the coaches since despite making it into the top 100 briefly in one publication when he tore up A & AA and made it to AAA in his 1st minor league season he's been persona non grata with lesser talents getting chances over him.
