Hopefully he is what Madrigal was *supposed* to be. Never hurts to have a high BA/high OBP guy in the lineup.

That was the first thought I had when I saw his profile. Madrigal was never going to really work because he never walked. When you're a little guy, you gotta try to succeed in ways that doesn't always rely on hitting the ball.

These types of trades never happen but I'd be all for it if someone valued catching more than another position prospect of similar ilk.

Quero is a tiny dude for a catcher and already had a back injury.  Not getting Teel in the deal because of Quero’s existence would have been foolish.  The Sox are so far away from trying to compete, they just need to keep stockpiling legit major leaguers

He’s currently ranked 8th in their system which includes at least six top 100 prospects, so not sure how much higher you would expect him.  That being said, his ceiling is limited as he doesn’t have a ton of power and isn’t a great defender (and probably not a real SS).  But dude has elite plate discipline and good bat to ball skills, so should be a high BA / high OBP type.  To me that, that offensive profile can work at the top of a lineup, even if he’s limited to 2B.

I saw #11 at MLB.com.

One other thing worth highlighting is that it’s now abundantly clear that Getz values guys who are disciplined and draw walks.  Here is a list of guys he’s acquired in his major trades and their BB rates prior to that:

  • Zavala:  19.4% in A (Y23)
  • Vargas:  19.9% in AAA
  • Perez:  13.7% in A
  • Albertus:  18.9% in CPX
  • Teel:  16.3% in AAA
  • Montgomery:  15.2% in College
  • Meidroth:  18.8% in AAA

I was going to post something similar. I believe this shows in recent draft trends as well.

Yup, it literally took me one godd*mned post using only his last name before my brain glitched on which Montgomery was being talked about. Motherf***er...

Maybe package Quero and Robert together for a club that needs C...try to get CF and SS back.

I am still digesting this trade.

Of Boston's top four prospects for the White Sox, Teel is the worst fit. Catching prospects are really difficult to hit and get value on, plus the fit with Quero seems awkward.

Montgomery has pop and a big arm, but is coming off an ankle injury and is several years away from the majors. Lengthy development path ahead, with hit tool questions that need to be answered.

Mediroth can hit and looks like a future utility player at the MLB level

Gonzalez is most likely a reliever, but Sox can continue to develop him as a potential starter.

I'm sure this was intentional, but it is noteworthy to me what the Red Sox did not trade. They kept their three up the middle top prospects (Anthony/Campbell/Mayer), as well as their toolsy teenage prospects who could be worth even more in a year (Arias, Cespedes, Bleis)

This may have been the best that Getz was offered, but I really wish the Sox would have focused on up the middle talent as the return.

I think this is all fair, but in this environment to get legit top 25/30 and top 60/70 positional prospects plus two interesting 45 FV guys is solid.  And to be fair, Teel is an up the middle talent, just not an obvious spot of need for us.  There is plenty of time to work through the roster construction, but I agree, where our next SS (if it’s not Colson) & CF comes from will be interesting.

No, crochet created his value. You'd have to be delusional to believe otherwise.

Why do you have to be so cock sure that your opinion is the end all be all ?

It's not all or  nothing. Yes the player has the talent. But when a player has a breakout it's the player and when they suck it's the Sox cant develop ? Clearly they've had a lot of success with pitching since they hired Bannister . A lot of the minor league arms show promise.

There was a plan created for him , they changed his pitch mix and his grip on certain pitches and at the end of the year he was learning a sinker to limit HRs against him. This plan was the result of many people including Bannister ,Katz and the medical staff to keep him on a strict schedule that he didn't want to deviant from if he was traded at the TDL.

Yes the talent was there but talent alone does not get you to the top especially in baseball.

I love this deal, a little shocked that Dave Dombrowski decided to hold onto Aidan Miller and Justin Crawford but this is a solid return. The one thing I like the most too is the attitude these prospects bring, unlike the last round of prospects we got from Boston, these kids seem like they actually want to play ball.

Eh, this just makes me wonder how he whiffed on the Cease return so much now.

Again, an example how people now state as fact that the Sox lost the Cease trade, and the question is very much up in the air (again, I think the Sox won that trade). But the complainers have to misrepresent so that they can justify being pissy and complaining. No poster more than this one.

Sort of ironic it's the Red Sox again, as Crochet and Sale have a lot of similarities. We should all be rooting for Crochet, hope he thrives.

And it will probably be the Red Sox again in 6 or 7 years when the Sox trade them Noah Schultz or Hagen Smith!

I wanted at least one toolsy youngster with upside to dream on in the return, like Franklin Arias, who could be a top 25 prospect in baseball by this time next year.

Boston was never going to include Anthony or Campbell for obvious reasons, and Mayer may have carried too much injury risk for the White Sox to stomach despite his upside and pedigree.

Not sure another club was going to offer the combination of prospects the White Sox received back, so Getz likely did the best he felt he could do.
