Chase Meidroth - No power makes him hot garbage.
Teel  is probably an upgrade at C and a LH bat. OK, I'm down with that part of the trade.

IMO, RFer Montgomery seems like the key player for the WSox in this trade.

On the other side of the coin, Crochet will be incredible at Yankee stadium and at Fenway. He puts the BoSox back in contention without giving up a single player on their 25 man roster. Likely a huge win for the BoSox of course, unless Crochet gets injured. Sox did a decent job of protecting his arm with inning management. BoSox will have to monitor that as well so he is there in the playoffs.

And now two of our Top 4-5 position and respects are catcher...with Quero unlikely to fit at 1B or DH with his offensive profile that's somewhat Narvaez reminiscent.

But at least they finally have a legit outfield prospect and maybe they can turn around and trade Quero for a greater need down the line.

If he flops offensively at the big league level...well, there's always attendance risk with Sox prospects.  No different with Montgomery.

Respoonse from Red Sox comment section mostly positive but FWIW this one was interesting.....

I was hoping for Crochet more then most. I am probably the low person on both Teel and Montgomery. Yet still feel its a pretty expensive cost for 2 years of Crochet without a reasonable extension.

I have never been that high on Teel. My biggest concerns are over his defense. He is hyper active behind the plate. Yippish almost. And his throwing has always been over rated and mediocre at best. And who knows about game calling. Offensively, I liked him, but mostly because he fit Fenway. He is physically petite to me and has limited upside with the power. Surprised he was the guy going back. Only had him probably in the 50’s as a prospect.

There are reasons Montgomery went 12th in the draft. The health thing is a bit of a concern. Again, the thing I liked most about him other then his arm was his fit in Fenway. Oppo power from the left side and sneaky pull power from the right. Oh well. White Sox now. Ranked him behind Arias so happy he was the 2nd guy going instead.

Sad to see Meidroth go. Could have been sneaky good with another notch or 2 of power. Had him 7th.

Wickleman was just outside my top 20. Should be a major leaguer of some sort eventually.

Mayer was arguably worth both Teel and Montgomery combined. Could still see him going to the Pirates for Jones or Chandler. Wow what a great young team would the Sox be then? Surprised neither of Bleis or Cespedes were in the deal.

No more mention of the name Cespedes please...

I think we are so far away from this being a concern in fact my top concern is with the age of the guys we are getting back we are going to burn through their service time before we are able to draft enough talent to get to the ML.

It probably will not matter much for the majority of these guys' service time if we use them to their full potential, but if I were constructing a roster, the simplest way to generate extra WAR would be to have a full-time, reliable all-around catcher and a catcher with a less reliable defense who can play 1B/DH and 60 odd or so games at catcher. Consider the Blue Jays and the extra production they were able to get from their two catchers. The average backup catcher is a major negative, hitting at a level that is nearly equal to a pitcher.

He says it's expensive for the RedSox and then proceeds to dog the top 2 players we got.

I can drive myself batty reading all of these things.

Isn’t Mayer hurt all of the time?

Yup. Ten in the top 70!

Only one that really has panned out is ReyLo. I guess the book is still out on Kopech and Robert. What a joke Carson Fulmer and Collins turned out to be. I don't think Rutherford ever made it to the bigs.

EDIT: Rutherford played for Washington in 2023 for 35 AB's. Numbers not pretty.

Well he rates all four as major leaguers of some sort. More about limiting the impact.

Even if he has no power, he can take a walk which Nicky did not. With the moves they are making it seems they are at least trying to value guys who can work at bats, which is something we have not seen from the Sox in…..I don’t even know how long.

That's what made the Cleveland teams of the 90s so potent. Every player in their lineup was an OBP monster.

Really good write up here...

Montgomery is arguably the co-headliner alongside Teel, and it would not be surprising if he emerges over the next calendar year as Chicago’s best position-player prospect. He appeared to be a consensus top-eight talent in the 2024 draft as a switch-hitting slugger out of Texas A&M, but he broke his ankle late in his junior season and ultimately fell to Boston at No. 12. He didn’t play after signing because of the injury, so now his pro debut will take place with a new organization. There are some questions about his overall hit tool, but Montgomery looks like a potential star right fielder on paper. This trade makes him one of the more intriguing players in minor-league baseball entering 2025, as he will look to make a strong first impression for a team that surely has sky-high expectations for him.

How does Thorpe stink? Before he got hurt he was highly effective. He was pitching with a hurt arm in his last 2 starts

He was awful when he pitched but he sure was lucky. I doubt that latter part will continue. If he throws 90-91 at his youthful peak his career is toast.

I don't think so.  It all depends on the offers really.  If they aren't there, you're better off betting on a better performance April-June, and cashing in then.  Now if you can get a really good up the middle prospect now, and a supporting piece or two, then sure.

Yeah I didn’t mean this week, I just meant this season at some point.

“There are reasons Montgomery went 12th in the draft. The health thing is a bit of a concern.”

Did Montgomery have any health issues other than the broken ankle he sustained with an awkward slide home against Oregon?  He was talked about being drafted as high as in the top four.  The draft was right after his broken ankle and he was still drafted 12th.  Weird thing to say.

So upon hearing the news I suspect Crochet was thinking fucking A yes!

What were the guys thinking coming to the White Sox organization? Lucky break, earlier route to private planes and better hotels or that's the end of my career.

That Boston is a s%*# hole and Chicago is a world class city?

Especially since I saw earlier someone say Mayer has been hurt every year.

Anyone else having déjà vu?  😶

Not really...because Robert Moncada Jimenez Kopech Giolito were expected to be All-Star or above talents.

With the current crop, both Montgomery's and Smith/Schultz are the only really truly "exciting" or close to dynamic, franchise-trajectory altering prospects.

Off the top of my head, the 2000 White Sox had to have had at least 8 or 9 Top 100 prospects.

You had Jon Rauch in the Top 5-10, as well as Joe Borchard in that Top 10-15 range.  Then you had a long list of pitching prospects like Jon Garland, Mark Buehrle (not a Top 100 by any stretch at that point), Jason Stumm, Rocky Biddle, Brian West, Lorenzo Barcelo, Matt Ginter, Josh Fogg, Aaron Myette...with Kip Wells already having graduated.  Pretty sure Crede/Rowand had already graduated from the list as well, but it was VERY VERY pitching heavy.  Mike Caruso debuted as well.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/2000-organization-of-the-year-chicago-white-sox/

“The people who criticized us in 1997 were White Sox fans, not fans of any other teams,” Reinsdorf said after the Sox clinched this year’s title. “The only reason they criticized us was they thought we were doing the wrong thing. Those people today, I’m sure, are as happy as I am, and are happy that they were wrong. All White Sox fans can rejoice.”

Sox fans certainly didn’t rejoice about the team’s payroll. Reinsdorf pointed to the poor attendance as a reason to ratchet down the payroll from $54.7 million at the start of 1997 to $24.5 million in ’99. The Sox increased that to about $31 million to start this season and $36.9 million by the end of the year.
