Of Boston's top four prospects for the White Sox, Teel is the worst fit. Catching prospects are really difficult to hit and get value on, plus the fit with Quero seems awkward. 

Montgomery has pop and a big arm, but is coming off an ankle injury and is several years away from the majors. Lengthy development path ahead, with hit tool questions that need to be answered. 

Mediroth can hit and looks like a future utility player at the MLB level

Gonzalez is most likely a reliever, but Sox can continue to develop him as a potential starter.

 

I'm sure this was intentional, but it is noteworthy to me what the Red Sox did not trade. They kept their three up the middle top prospects (Anthony/Campbell/Mayer), as well as their toolsy teenage prospects who could be worth even more in a year (Arias, Cespedes, Bleis)

This may have been the best that Getz was offered, but I really wish the Sox would have focused on up the middle talent as the return.

Yeah just don’t love the idea of one moving to 1B. Either one loses value in that scenario. Unless one can actually hit like a 1B should.

Agreed. They got time to figure it out. This stuff will sort itself out later.

Agreed. People are resisting giving up Top 100 bats and we got two. Getz did well. 

Maybe move Quero for a bat at another position?

If they’re being honest with themselves, flipping Crochet for 2 - 55 FV and 2 - 45 FV prospects would have seemed impossible  as recently as 6 months ago. Perhaps the Cease trade may ultimately underwhelm but this trade may make up for it. That’s what happens when you make a bunch of trades during a rebuild. Some look great, some not so much. There will be plenty more opportunities to flip vets for prospects over the next 24 months but those were certainly the two biggest chips they had since they already blew it by not trading Robert last winter.

He was their #7 prospect heading into 2024 per BA.  He may have regressed this past season, but he’s still young and likely a guy that Bannister had his eye on.  He’s the perfect dart throw as the fourth piece in a deal like this.

nice deal. i’m pleasantly surprised. not at all worried about adding teel with quero already in the system. just accumulate high-value assets and sort it out later.

Oh dang. Klaw is going to have the Sox as a top 5 system now. Quite the turnaround from bottom 2 a couple years ago. If they tank another 2-3 years like the Orioles recently did, the system will look very nice. But unlike the Orioles, the Sox don’t have the good fortune of picking top 5 every year in a row while they tank.

I’m not complaining about the trade, but two starting caliber catchers isn’t going to help us when we have massive holes in CF, SS, etc.  But for now, I’m just happy he got quality positional talent and we can worry about roster construction later.

Gonzalez had a real Jekyll and Hyde season.

First 9 starts, through June 21: 39.2 IP, 38 R (!), 37 H, 29 BB, 9 HBP, 4 WP, 3 HR, 4 balks (!?), 43 K.

Final 10 starts, starting June 28: 44 IP, 22 H, 10 R (1.84 ERA), 17 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 0 balks, 3 HR, 49 K

So I'd like to know what was going on starting in late June. Pretty clear the Sox believe/hope that he solved something.
