I’m not complaining about the trade, but two starting caliber catchers isn’t going to help us when we have massive holes in CF, SS, etc.  But for now, I’m just happy he got quality positional talent and we can worry about roster construction later.

If that actually comes to fruition, we can trade one of them. And by the time that happens, the Sox will have a better idea of the  holes they need to cover (right now, it's 9 by my count).

I would say I’m satisfied…not over or underwhelmed.  It’s nice not having to worry about Crochet’s elbow exploding

This feels about right.  Nice return.  All four are legit pieces.  Two top 50-60 types. 3 position players.  No absolute fliers.

Crochet is nasty, but him pitching every 5th day the next two years does this club no good at all.  And the injury risk is significant, no one will convince me otherwise.

What’s the deal with this dude?  Other than a smaller stature, does he have a weak glove or something?

One would think he would be ranked even higher in the Red Sox farm system with the numbers he has put up.

He’s currently ranked 8th in their system which includes at least six top 100 prospects, so not sure how much higher you would expect him.  That being said, his ceiling is limited as he doesn’t have a ton of power and isn’t a great defender (and probably not a real SS).  But dude has elite plate discipline and good bat to ball skills, so should be a high BA / high OBP type.  To me that, that offensive profile can work at the top of a lineup, even if he’s limited to 2B.

Teel and Montgomery is a good return, IMO.

That's 2 Top 100 bats and Teel should be a longtime above avg LH catcher that will not just stick but be pretty good at that spot and  can probably hit at the league average which is very good for a C.

Montgomery will be a very good RF with a cannon arm and a savage LH bat as a switch hitter with very good power from the left side in particular.

Good job Getz...you gotta give him his due.

This makes me feel better. Didn't catch that Teel is LH. And maybe they finally found a legit RF too?

Also, can we now officially mock the people that were convinced the Sox were going to dump Beni in this deal?

I'll eat crow and own it. I thought it was likely because of JR's cheapness.

Definitely mock the guy "with connections" that kept saying it was definitely going to happen haha

Now trade him for another sunk cost you can get out of sooner.

So Sox system now has 6 T100 guys? With a deep return like this one let’s see if Getz can flip Robert for 1 more. I realize 3 of the current 6 are likely to graduate in 2025 but the #10 pick in July plus a top 3 pick in 2026 should replenish the system nicely. Finally starting to see the early stages of the next young core.

C/1b - Teel and Quero

2b - Meidroth / Baldwin

SS - Montgomery

3b - Ramos / Vargas

OF - Montgomery / Wolkow

P - Schultz / Smith / Thorpe / Cannon / Iriarte

It’s a start…Now flip Robert for Justin Crawford and we call it an offseason. Then grab Summerhill in the 2025 draft and Emerson in the 2026 draft.

why would you trade Robert now unless you got a really good return.  they've got control of him for 3 more years, and new coaches/hitting guru installed who might be able to turn him around (assuming they can keep him healthy)

I would hang onto Robert for at least one more season before selling him for scraps

Sort of ironic it's the Red Sox again, as Crochet and Sale have a lot of similarities. We should all be rooting for Crochet, hope he thrives.

Easy guy to root for.  I hope he can stay healthy.  He's going to get paid soon.

From the reports I've seen, Getz is asking for a 2023 return on Robert, not his results from 2024. If someone wants to pay 2023 prices, fine...but if they are only offering up packages that line up with his production from 2024...no reason to trade him right now.

While Teel is an awkward fit, catchers that can hit and field are pretty damn valuable.  Sox now have 2 of them, and 2 of the top 6-7 catching prospects in the game.  Not beyond the realm of possibility one could be moved for an up the middle talent this offseason or at a future date.  Its a good problem to have, albeit, still have lots of holes to fill.

Hopefully he is what Madrigal was *supposed* to be. Never hurts to have a high BA/high OBP guy in the lineup.

From a raw value perspective, Getz did better than he did last year. I'm not a huge fan of trading for catching prospects in general - teams rarely-to-never trade the truly generational catching prospects. Montgomery some big tools, but I worry about his general athleticism as a defender and how he'll age in that area. If he hits, who cares, but I think he's possibly a negative defender and runner.

I also think most here are undervaluing Crochet because of personally living through his injury ups and downs.

Agreed. People are resisting giving up Top 100 bats and we got two. Getz did well.

Maybe move Quero for a bat at another position?

These types of trades never happen but I'd be all for it if someone valued catching more than another position prospect of similar ilk.

One other thing worth highlighting is that it’s now abundantly clear that Getz values guys who are disciplined and draw walks.  Here is a list of guys he’s acquired in his major trades and their BB rates prior to that:

  • Zavala:  19.4% in A (Y23)
  • Vargas:  19.9% in AAA
  • Perez:  13.7% in A
  • Albertus:  18.9% in CPX
  • Teel:  16.3% in AAA
  • Montgomery:  15.2% in College
  • Meidroth:  18.8% in AAA
