Schriffen does/has done all of those.

I'd suggest there is a real difference between calling the G-League, Slam-Ball and UFC compared to calling MLB, NFL, major college football and basketball games.

The fact that Jason has been given those opportunities says something about what those in charge think of his abilities.

From Paul Sullivan's sports year wrap up column on Sunday:

Top 5 Schriff-isms

The most memorable calls of first-year Sox broadcaster John Schriffen:
  • “For all the haters …”
  • “South Side, stand up!”
  • “Radio losers”
  • “We ain’t takin’ that.”
  • “I need this win.”

All those calls are embarrassing. When you have a 42-win team, cmon, as much as you want to get excited, the team has prevented that. Any attempt at being 'overly' positive is ridiculous. You have to treat each game as its own but the big picture of team suckiness can never be ignored. South Side Stand Up is so bad. The haters and losers thing is counterproductive. And the final two are not worth commenting on they are so bad.

Haha, the “We ain’t takin’ that” was so cringy and epic due to the timing.  The Sox were already terrible and Schriffen was trying to hype up a brawl with the Brewers.  Awful.

While the comments against him by others in the Chicago media may have been unfair (personally I don't think so) there is no way you win in that situation by responding publicly, and making it worse was that it was on the broadcast itself as opposed to say on social media.

It was unprofessional and childish and that comes from someone who has been in broadcasting since 1978.

Not to mention he thought Pham was his "bro" but in the end Tommy made fun of him upon leaving for always hanging around the players/clubhouse.

What a dummy. You always got the feeling Hawk/Stoney while making regular contact with players didn't try to bond with the boys in the locker room. Even though he's young, Schiff is not prime 'become one of us' material with the players. Leave 'em alone; ask 'em something while flying by once in a while. Do an interview when u are supposed to. Don't force things

Sadly, you would be mistaken, at least with Hawk.  Nothing beats when Hawk left the booth to check on Todd Frazier…  🤣

The difference is that Harrelson was a former big leaguer...and that was more of a "paternalistic" concern, versus a non-athlete trying to ingratiate himself with the players by hanging out with them.

Plus Harrelson obviously golfed a lot with the players during the course of the season as well.  There's a lot of camaraderie we don't ever see that takes place on the course.

What do you know about relationships with professional athletes?

One would hope that will be part of his stated growth. Steve Stone or Hawk might garner respect for having played the game. Bennetti earned it through his preparation. Maybe Shriffen will become the trash talk announcer that players start to think is cool in time. He's got to get there, first.

Sullivan has been covering sports in Chicago for decades. I find his criticism of a young broadcaster to be unseemly and highly inappropriate. Maybe time for him to retire.  What a jerk.

Any of the homers on Soxtalk could’ve done his job the way he did it. Unfortunately for him, he came on board when most Sox fans would rather he sign off every game “sell the team”. He would not last long, but it would’ve been heroic.

Man, Schriff living rent free in people's heads.

To me he was one of the few entertaining qualities of last years SOX/Production (I understand he has got to grow and be better but I was entertained by him)

somebody said he mispronounced veeck's name. You can't do that period. Chicagoans are unforgiving when somebody is that dumb.

He's great. Chicago media furious they didn't hire one of their many boys though so he has to work through that.

Uhhh, no.  No one cares about Connor McKnight that much.  Although he probably wouldn’t have stuck his foot in his mouth as many times as Schriffen already has, had he been hired instead.
