Agreed. He was surplus value. Fantastic signing. We'll be lucky if Wilson is as good.

I said "as a White Sox." Between Clevinger and Fedde, Getz has done a fantastic job signing FA pitchers.

Chris Getz signed Clevinger for $3 million as a free agent and got -0.1 fWAR out of him. How exactly is that a good signing?

Clevinger was worth $22.5M in WAR for the Sox and was paid $12M. Fantastic value.

Rick Hahn signed Clevinger without doing a background check on him, and had to admit he wouldn't have done that signing had he done his due diligence. He got fired. Literally all of Clevinger's performance came from Rick Hahn.

Chris Getz signed known domestic abuser Clevinger for $3 million, at a time when no one around the league other than Chris Getz would touch him. He was a full free agent again, so the White Sox could have gone elsewhere, he could have gone to Korea, whatever. He was worth -$0.9 million.

I will take $2 million to produce 0 War sitting on my ass and that would make me a better signing than Clevinger was for Getz.

The tremendous value we got out of Clevinger was a team effort. You're right.

Clevinger’s value was really only in what he could return in a trade.  No one wanted him because of the shitstorm surrounding him.  So while it’s great that he put up a 3 WAR for Rick Hahn and his 61-101 team in 2023, ultimately who cares?  The Sox paid him $15 million over two seasons and have nothing to show for it.  Now, no team even wants him, but I’m sure Clevinger is still enjoying that $15 million dollars for 24 good starts in 2023.

I'll agree that Clevenger's only value would have been in trade. But we already saw that nobody wanted to pick him off waivers just for the price of his contract in 23. His signing in 24 was a pure desperation move to get any innings from a competent pitcher, and he failed at that. I'd love to never hear his name or see his ferret face again.

You're completely discounting the impact he had on Sox PR as well as the fractured clubhouse...would you dare hire him to coach your kid, for example?

Probably not.

And his health was always going to be murky at best, which was the final nail in the coffin for his lack of "tradability."

The Sox didn't receive much national scrutiny, and the average fan didn't care that he was falsely accused of domestic violence. The clubhouse was fractured by Grandal and Lynn, not Clevinger.
