CaliSoxFanViaSWside
Clickbait title but its true. I know the board is skeptical of all things White Sox but just cannot help themselves either hating everything or looking ahead since things have perked up this offseason. SInce Getz made so many new hires recently , if you've been paying any attention at all, you've seen them in multiple podcasts all over Youtube . They all express optimism about creating a winner. I can hear the laughter now . John Ely is not a recent hire. He was the pitching coach at AA Birmingham Barons and he gives you his perspective on many of the pitchers he coached this past season. He particularly says very good things about Noah Schultz. I hope you all enjoy and have a wonderful holiday season !

I wish McGuffey just would've kept a little more quiet and let Ely talk. He was extremely honest and had me thinking that kind of honesty may not be appreciated when he says he's told what to do and no one asks him for his opinion on if he thinks someone is ready or not. I thought that Navy Seal was supposed to enhance communication between departments. At the end you could see how excited Ely was about Elko but BA brought him up. Yes BA is Brian Anderson. Overall though a real good podcast. I get it McGuff talks like these guys are his best friends so it's a loose format but he still needs to let the guest talk because he's the one with the insight. Talked about just about every arm he saw however briefly, Schonele, Coffey, Carela, Eder, Schultz, Smith, Adams, Thorpe, Taylor, Iriarte, Cannon, Bush Sounds like he would've preferred Schonele and Coffey should've been brought up at the end of the year instead of Iriarte. Timmy U
Thanks for posting this. The whole interview is awesome. Ely is really high on Schultz, obviously. Very high on Carela. Loves Cannon. Thinks Thorpe is going to figure it out. Iriarte has upside, but there is a lot to do. High praise for Garret Schonle and Adisyn Coffey too.

I love this type of stuff . He really didn't mince words , optimistic but knows it's a long road.

Love how he talks up Coffey and Schoenle. The insider dish on why the Burger trade happened was fun, too.

Yes that was weird like KW had a 2 team or 2 player trade exemption where he didn't have to talk to Hahn about it with the Marlins and 1 other team I forget. I thought McGuff was kidding because it sounded so odd. One name we didn't hear him talk about was Peyton Pallette. That guy went from a zero to a hero . 7 ERA as a starting pitcher in 12 starts going only 44 innings. Then a 1 ERA in 45 innings as a relief pitcher. Not 1.9 but 1.01. That's another guy who could make an impact or at least get a shot in Spring Training. He wasn't promoted to AAA so he could end up there because he's 23 so younger than Coffey and Schoenle. That's a decent amount of innings he pitched.

WhiteSox2023
Did Ely call Grant Taylor “Logan” Taylor? And the hosts didn’t correct him? They don’t know the correct name of the Sox 8th ranked prospect?

Ely questioned some of Getz’s call-ups last year and also the pitchers he didn’t call up. He also made a joke about trading some of the Sox young pitching for established hitting but that at some point the Sox would have to pay the hitter. Definitely comments from a guy who is on his way out and doesn’t care about getting reprimanded.

Oh I don't . I know that there are people who don't post their cautiously optimistic views because you have to preface everything you say with I'm no Getz supporter. I also know that all but only the top prospects are truly visible to most Sox fans even the ones who post here so trying to commit more names to the 2025 team of 100+ losses doesn't matter. I'm NO Sox farm expert like the Future Sox guys but I have noticed that they are a pretty optimistic group but they stick to the podcasts. James Fox is the only one who ventures into Palehose talk and even he's been getting slammed a little for his opinions. Sometimes you have to dig deeper, outside the top 30 Sox prospects to find guys to help the team especially that trio of relief pitchers , Coffey, Schonele (I think I finally am getting the spelling right) and Peyton Pallette. bmags
Is him growing taller even a good thing? When he was drafted the big commentary was how few pitchers that tall had seen success. the better news would be if he’d shrunk down to the fatter parts of the distribution. Getting taller is cool though. Annoys me that colson is now only measured as 6’4 when I thought we had a 6’6” shortstop.

Couldve been about some college player who didn't go on to pro ball. I think BA and Ely have some history together . Their paths may have crossed in 2010 or so. They're 4 yrs apart . They could've been teammates at some level.

I meant to say I'm no expert btw on the farm system like the guys on Future Sox are. And do I push back against stuff ? Sure I do. There's quite a few bullies here and I don't like people getting ridiculed. So if I call people out so be it but I only push back. I do not make a habit of using trigger words or phrases when actually discussing baseball in a civil manner. I have confidence in my baseball knowledge and my ability to be objective and not let my love or hate for the team cloud my judgement . I do understand the current owner of the team is a huge obstacle and casts a dark cloud over many opinions. I voice my criticism of him quite often and give his employees a lot of leeway because of that. Even if they appear incompetent it's mainly because they weren't hired in many instances because of their qualifications and are put in situations where it's easier to fail because of financial or other restrictions imposed by the owner.

I'm about 6'5.5 and I was 6 '4" as a HS Sr. I had a teammate on the basketball team who was 6'5" and grew another 6 inches after he was 18 and led North Park a division 3 Christian Chicago college to 3 straight basketball titles. I just get a kick out of listening to Ben Badler of Baseball America talking about him and saying 6'9 about 3 times in a recent podcast that discussed the Crochet trade and the Central division farm teams. He's like .5 inch taller than Randy Johnson is listed on Baseball Reference.

So someone made a mistake on a guy 2 levels below him who he doesn't know a lot about. He admitted he didn't know much about Hagen Smith too. He's not Bannister or Getz he was the AA pitching coach. He only mentioned Taylor in passing as a guy he knew of who had a lot of potential. He's not as familiar with him. His greater point was it was very difficult to try to name the starting 5 on the 2027 White Sox when he's not familiar with all the pitchers. Maybe he just watched Logan or Logan Lucky.

Falstaff
It was a great interview, to hear Schultz grew 1 1/2 inches really was something. CaliSox you are right on about Future Sox and James Fox, I love those guys, what a wealth of Sox information.
