And how about Josh Fields and Casey Blake? Because those were the returns for Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Santana. Pretty bad.

And the Red Sox famously traded Curt Shilling, Brady Anderson and Jeff Bagwell in failed bids to bulk up for the '88 and '90 playoffs. I'm sure that's what made Craig Breslow's eyes glaze over in his zombie-like transformation, and he declared, "must ... trade ... valued ... prospects ... to ... white sox!" Because, historically, that's what the Red Sox have done.

Because of the previous regime's neglect of the farm system, KW/Hahn were forced to deal from a paucity of talent to supplement their roster. I would think that stories about how we passed on drafting Ron Guidry or trading Bobby Bonilla have as much bearing as the trade of Semien or Tatis, right now.

Wait a minute, KW was in charge of the minors before he took over as GM.  He was part of that problem, was he not?

sounds so familiar I can’t put my finger on it

Where the philosophy was typically to dump prospects for much more reliable veteran players...which eventually proved to be unsustainable as the 2005 WS team gradually withered away on the vine.

But it was a competitive/at least "in the game" model for 13 years.  And the Sox were certainly relevant as a historic franchise with an identifiable branding/logo.

The Dodgers also have two World Series championships and have been to the playoffs 11 years in a row, so they get a pass.

And that was my point. Even a great organization like the Dodgers makes many mistakes in trades so the Sox list you cited just isn't all that unique. Could make a similar list for basically every team if going back 15 years.

Right, and many teams are run well enough where they can absorb those mistakes and still be successful.

Meanwhile, because the Sox have been bad at almost everything, they have way less margin for error. They don’t have other strengths to fall back on, and it’s nobody’s fault but their own.

Every Sox mistake is magnified because their margin of error is so slim. Every mistake is cast under a microscope because of organizational issues that start with ownership. That’s a separate discussion.

I'll take a MLB ready player over a kid at the lowest rung of the ladder. If he's eating any innings in June we can pick up a AA arm for him.

Plus now we have a pitcher that really understands framing.
