This is the crazy guy no one wanted as manager, right? Really makes me wonder what qualifies him for a front office job.

He's managed in 5 different organizations in the last 16 years (Tigers, D-backs, Giants, Yankees, Angels). I would think a minor league manager could just step into a developmental or scouting role. Front office? It doesn't take long to learn how to use email and his key-card.

From an article written when he was made interim manager of the Angels:

Quote

In describing his managerial style, Nevin emphasized first and foremost his philosophy of relationship building throughout the organization, which includes checking in with each of his players every single day. He “embraces” analytics, but he also believes that small ball has a time and a place in contemporary baseball, and you might see him call for a bunt later on in games. He’s also not afraid to get emotional when the situation calls for it.

From 2015:

“He’s highly rated,” La Russa said. “He did a hell of an interview. He got serious consideration for this job. He would do an outstanding job. I think Phil would be on a list of guys.”

Yeah but I think that was about the manager. Sounds like he is a glorified scout. Doubt he will be breathing down Will’s neck at the ballpark every single day.

edit - in fact James said he is totally fine with him in this role on Twitter.

That's probably what everyone would have thought about Wonder Boy Getz vis a vis "old/er lions" KW and Hahn...especially with the TLR connections to Kevin so obvious.

Or we're more concerned with finding well-paying jobs on our coaching staff than logic ally fitting them all together.

How many scouts do we have left standing after the bloodletting this past 18 months?

And what exactly does Hostetler do now/still?

He is a special assistant in player development. I guess it has been a few days so some of you need something to be angry about.

Angry they're thinking Sox fans would be equally as excited about coaching staff additions than actually improving the team through real talent via free agency...

From the Chris Getz hatred, we all know that the Assistant to Player Development is the true power center of this organization. Hell, Chris Getz ran the White Sox from that roll with the Royals. Nevin now has more power than Reinsdorf.

You're right, having a dude with temper issues developing impressionable young players sounds like a good idea.

Hiring certainly isn't impactful but it'll never stop being concerning that LaRussa still has his teeth sunk in to this org and is clearly guiding some choices.

He has been a player fave. I would think having someone the players feel is "on their side" gets their attention, and helps sell the organization's developmental ideas. He is also an analytics proponent.

He can also teach the players to "look like they care" when they're slumping, breaking water coolers, and stuff - for the sports talk meat heads.
