He has been a player fave. I would think having someone the players feel is "on their side" gets their attention, and helps sell the organization's developmental ideas. He is also an analytics proponent.

He can also teach the players to "look like they care" when they're slumping, breaking water coolers, and stuff - for the sports talk meat heads.

I 100% believe TLR told Getz to hire him for this reason.

"Director of Giving a Rat's Ass."

This is the crazy guy no one wanted as manager, right? Really makes me wonder what qualifies him for a front office job.

I know he got that wrap here - but he has been in game forever and was a very smart catcher. I’ve only heard real good things about him through my Fullerton connections.

You quoted him to begin with on something he would have not liked that.

Correct, because I was surprised to see him being critical of a move Getz and Co. were possibly going to make, felt like it was significant.

Weird how when they actually hire him, albeit for a different role, it's all good, "makes a lot of sense" now....🙄

Who was that when Grifol was manager...the so called "good cop"?

Grady Sizemore was supposed to be the opposite...genuinely a players' manager.

What is his role now?

Nevin would seem like a non uniforned guy in this newmy established role...except perhaps when visiting minor league affiliates.

Not to mention a dude who lead the world in sac bunting and giving intentional walks, completely counter to analyitcal baseball in 2024.

Well, we can't exactly score by hitting homers with Moncada Robert Jimenez Abreu Burger off the team, so...let's mimic the Royals' approach, but without their contact hitters and stolen base threats.

His philosophy in that manager article was that he liked to check in with his players every single day. Maybe he's just part of being more on top of minor league players. There's a lot of them.

I have read that the latest "untapped market inefficiency" is empathy. Sports psychology is the biggest investment right now in college sports.

I completely forgot the Angels threw Nevin out there as a catcher one year.

Wild world we lived in back then.

Well good thing he won’t be making those calls in games.

Sure, I am sure in player development you don't work on the mental approach for game situations, or when you should bunt.  I am sure the Player Dev people don't work with the teams coaching and management on game philosophy at all.  All of these completely new hires doing completely new things is going to go great!

You're right, having a dude with temper issues developing impressionable young players sounds like a good idea.

I mean... it probably is a good idea lol. Certainly better than the hippie "do whatever you want, we don't care, have a nap" no accountability attitude the organization been had. How impressionable is a 22-year-old gonna be, are we worried Colson's gonna grow up and be like his daddy, Phil Nevin? Or that they'll crack if someone raises their voice at them?

I'm nto sure why people are so up in arms about hiring a competent person to do a job they are probably overqualified for.

Yeah, this went so well with Tony, let's do it again!  Oh no wait, everything is different and better now!

The idea that people are failing because they don't yelled at enough is such a crazy flex that I just keep waiting for to die and go away.

Seems like a logical fallacy. Nevin isn’t the manager nor is he Tony la Russa. Every Sox player who played for him recently and speaks about him seems to admire him, read what Tim Anderson said about him for example. I’m not sure why you’re offended on the players’ behalf and treating them like children.

I’m not sure what I’m “flexing” by saying that sometimes athletes get yelled at by their coaches and it isn’t a big deal. I’m a total wimp, I don’t raise my voice, I’m not “flexing”, but I am suggesting it works to motivate and if pro athletes are too sensitive, go work at Starbucks or whatever else they’re qualified to do.

One can also clearly see the failure of past Sox staff to hold players accountable for their play and behavior. The previous hitting coach proudly said “the players do their own thing and we don’t interfere unless they ask”, like how well did that work?

I also think posters are making up the temper thing. What do you know? Because he gets in umpires’ faces and scolded his team on camera once? This thread is bizarre.

I don't think anyone is "up in arms"

But I personally believe it's fair to question the specific move when we know it probably doesn't happen if LaRussa isn't still part of this organization, and doesn't still have quite a bit of sway internally. Especially when it seems like Getz has made certain moves and investments into new technology, fresh eyes and approach. Whereas LaRussa gave an interview, shortly before coming back to manage the Sox, where he spoke about having the desire to coach again to help "correct the balance" in baseball, referring to "too much data" being used, and not making decisions based on the players "head, heart and guts"

You don't have to squint very hard to already see a disconnect happening between different parts of the front office.

lol it’s funny when you assign that “hippie” adage to a TLR clubhouse.  Does not compute

I see more of a failure of the front office to be held accountable, along with White Sox ownership.

And saying you don't believe something, even with a plurality of evidence out there to support it, isn't a reflection of everyone else...

I love when random message board guys sitting at their work laptops get bent out of shape about a hire like this.  As if they know anything about the role he's hired for or his qualifications.

I wish I was so confident about s%*# I don't know about like some of you.  Truly remarkable skill.

Yet here you are just as confidently talking about people who have opinions different than yours.

Also amusing is the guy getting mad at the guy getting mad.  Messageboard inception!
