He was also a huge bust as a draft pick - best player from Fullerton ever - but not best big leaguer from there by far.

I don’t doubt that Nevin is capable of identifying talent…just as long he’s not the guy being hands on teaching his style of baseball to them. Why not? He's played the game for 12 years on 7 different teams. Has coached/managed in 5 different organizations over 16 years. I mean, no, it's not like he's spent that time gaining the valuable experience of commenting on a baseball message board, but he didn't totally waste those 28 years in the pro game. What it sounds like on paper doesn't make much sense though does it? Why this guy as a special assistant in player development? I hate prejudging hires like this because I don't know how its going to work out, but yeah this totally feels like one of those things that gets thrown into the tell all story about why things broke down in 2 years. "They didn't know how to use the analytical data because Phil Nevin kept saying they didn't want to use that and he locked the GM out of a bunch of group chats" or something equally ridiculous. And if that seems unfair, it's literally what we just went through.

Chicago White Sox
This board is getting worse than Congress with its extremist views. Either you must hate everything the org does no matter how trivial in order to get the rage out of your system or you must spin everything that Getz does in a favorable light regardless if it has sound backing to it to help retain some level of hope. This board used to have great discussion and now it’s just non-stop whining & spinning by the same group of posters 24/7. Unfortunately, those of us who are angry AF at the organization but still want to give Getz a chance (even if 100% undeserved) can’t have good honest debates on moves as the loudest posters disrupt everything with their relentless pessimism or optimism. 6

And if that seems unfair, it's literally what we just went through. Alright, in the spirit of Chicago White Sox's comment (I wish he'd adjust his name to something more identifiable), this seems to be to be the hiring of a pal. I don't know how valuable Nevin is. BOB called it a shrewd move, but he's persona non grata in White Sox land. I'm guessing he's just a roving guy, and either reports to JR and TLR, or really will work with Janish and Shirley. It could be an efficiency to pull in development guys to help cover more ground for draft scouting. I believe Getz had a bunch of draft scouts moving around a few teams' minor league systems to scout their guys for eventual Crochet and Robert deals. This is one of those moves where I don't like it, because believe it or not, I get influenced by all the negative, and do have a slightly negative view of Nevin, mostly due to the "throw at that hitter" incident. But he's a baseball lifer from outside the organization, so there's that. I also see this as throwing Nevin a bone until the next round of managerial interviews open up. I don't think he's coaching them to throw at people he doesn't like from a developmental standpoint.

This team has been in a downward spiral since Tony LaRussa took over. They are literally the worst team in baseball and continue to make dumbass moves. The majority of everyone is pissed off, and rightfully so. There is not really much positive to discuss here. I miss the days when the White Sox just won 80ish games every year and we at least had hope they would put it together next season. Quin
And sorry @Chicago White Sox, you've been a good poster for years here, but let's be 100: You once got so fed up with this team that you declared you were leaving Chicago for Nashville due to this team. Like, why should the anti-Getz Caucus (if we're truly going this route) support trading a young, live-arm for a 32-year-old carpenter? Hiring a guy toxic ex-manager to be part of the organization? Slashing the payroll to Fischerian levels? Should we be OK with Reinsdorf playing footsie with Dave Stewart and Nashville while the Ishbia brothers were apparently making offers? Like, what has the team done to deserve any benefit of the doubt?

I am pissed off too…everyone should be. And I just called out the posters who try to justify every past & present Getz action. Clearly he was not qualified for the GM job and I will argue that until the end of time. And I have been very critical of his trades since becoming GM…the track record is very bad so far. All that being said, he inherited an organization that is broken to its core and that will take time to fix. He has made some interesting outside hires in several key positions. He is making major investments in foundational areas like pro scouting, international scouting, player development, & analytics. Whether those moves will untimely work out remains to be seen and people have a right to be skeptical…I myself am skeptical. But once we get to the point of saying that nothing will ever work out because we are the White Sox we eliminate any chance of actual discussion and that is my major beef. 2

Getz aside, my main point was we had back to back 100 loss season for the first time ever (including the worst season in MLB history) so the mood and discussion around here is just not going to be in the majority positive. Its hard to have an actual discussion when our roster is trash, there is nothing worth discussing about Austin Slater being an improvement over Gavin Sheets in RF. Like who gives a f***, there is no positive way to spin that. The best thing for all of us is to see plenty of the kids this season and them to show promise. Then we will have way better things to discuss. Right now, its optimist trying to sell Mike Tauchman and Bryse Wilson as some sort of reason why this team is going to win 55 games, I mean come on.

Dude, the people who run the board maintain a very negative, anti-Getz vibe, here. I've already said that I start viewing neutral moves as negative because of the constant wave of negativity, not just here, but everywhere. All over sports. The only way to deal with it is to push back on the obvious BS. Then I'm a "Getz-lover" who tries to defend every action. The fact that I see Nevin's hiring as a "give him a paycheck until the next round of managerial interviews" is just trying to figure it out. I actually see your attitude as refreshing and nuanced. All a lot of people here want to do is discuss White Sox baseball.
T R U
A good example, go look at our current 40 man roster. There is not one good major leaguer on that thing outside of Luis Robert and even that depends on who you ask around here. This organization is just in the dumps from top to bottom and how they go, the fan base goes unfortunately.
