Berroa was a big part of the Santos return, and is actually pretty interesting. Marinaccio was recently claimed and has a 3.22 big league ERA in over 120 innings; he might be the closer. Varland was recently claimed too, and was actually pretty good out of the pen end of last season. I don't care much for Ellard, and he's probably who they cut for Perez, but the org liked him enough to give him 25 big league appearances last season, and was serviceable. The point isn't really that these guys are not cuttable, but 3/4 guys you listed are literally guys this regime brought in very recently. Jake
I think last offseason, Getz was making moves like he was afraid the Sox might find themselves in a situation where they have one too many deserving players for the MLB roster/lineup. This offseason, I don't think he's looking it at that way anymore, which is good. Not to say I think we'll find the Sox with too many good players at any point soon... Just another guy that best case scenario we're getting someone else's junk. But at $3.5M + $1.5M buyout, its whatever. Expand I’m with you. I get the “you can never have enough pitching” mantra but we have a ton of young arms on the cusp and aren’t really trying to win next year. As such, you can always find some AAAA arms to give innings to if guys aren’t ready or in the event of lots of injuries.
Bob Sacamano
Idk you need a lot of arms. Plus, if he is respectable, he’ll he dealt sometime in the summer. Plenty of innings for young guys after that. Plus, injuries happy and you really can’t plan for that (unless their names are Yoán, Eloy, Luis haha)

caulfield12
He was incredibly important to the Padres getting 4-5 inning starts down the stretch as a fifth or swing man...after they'd traded away almost all their prospect depth for relievers. I'm just dubious on how much of that success can again be replicated at GR Field with our projected defense minus Luis Robert. He is LH at least...compared to the RH Flexen, and seems equally comfortable out of the pen or starting. This year's Jesse Chavez. Given the salary restrictions by the owner, this is an A move by Getz. Expand Three years ago, he was worth a startlingly high 3.9 fWAR, a HUGE bargain. Of course, his last two seasons, it's 0.5 and 0.4, and four seasons ago, at 0.7, so the average would be around 0.5-0.6 fWAR per season, meaning he's pretty much fairly valued at $3.5 million and entering his age 34 season. Of course, if you incorporate his 3.9 with the other other three years, you get 5.5/4, or 1.4, which means his fair value would be closer to $10-11 million. Chicago White Sox
So who gets DFAed as a result of this move? Scholtens is not a good SP, but he has options and there is value in having a guy like that who can be called up on a whim with no concern for their well-being or development. Murfee and Colas are the two who seem mostly likely to me, although with only 16 positional players on the 40 man now my guess will be Murfee.
