Like who needs to establish themselves and who would he be blocking ? NRI's rarely make the ML team out of spring training especially a guy barely pitched last year who never really overcame his control problem but had nasty K ability at the expense of his control and shoulder.

They don't seem like they are in any hurry to add a bunch of young guys to the 40 just yet.

If they can flip 4 older relief pitchers at the deadline they'll do it. Which ones get the shot I have no idea. It's going to be a revolving door. You pitch well, you stick, if not , try someone else.

If Robert fails in the 1st half getting much of anything at the TDL will be difficult .If you add a bunch of young relief pitchers to the 40 or 26 and they succeed you won't want to trade them . You want to trade the older ones you're picking up off the scrap heap. Maybe you can get a DSL SS .

Sure, but you spend legit money on someone like Chapman and you can end up with Cole Ragans...who has been even more impactful than even Crochet on AL Central fortunes.

Like most FA signings, I say to myself: Who?

OTOH I certainly don't expect any household names

As Sox fans, we know who this guy is.  When sticky stuff was banned, he dropped off dramatically.  However, he got better again…maybe slyly using sticky stuff again.

The real fun of it was he was called out on the air by Steve Stone, who would now have to call his games and even be on the cramped team plane with him if he was ever called up.

Is that worse than another season of Clevinger...Perez and Scholtens maybe Iriarte are the best options for #5 if Thorpe can't go to start the season.

Burke has had less than a handful of starts as well.

2024 saw the White Sox leave ST with about 2.5 starting pitchers. For the upcoming season, we already have 7-10 options on the big club, or in AAA. There is no gaping void in the rotation that Clevenger might fill. I'm not sure why you're even bringing him up. Karinchak is an idiot. He's not on the odious level of a child abuser.

Added: As Scholtens returns from TJS, I doubt he does anything before June.

I feel like I've heard this for about half my lifetime as a fan.

There's depth, and then there's quality depth.

There is a discernible difference.

Get past Cannon, Martin, Wilson, Burke and Perez (who probably needs a playoff race for motivation)...who's the next best option?  Maybe Iriarte, Shuster or Nastrini?

None of those names above provides a Top 1-2-3 in a rotation profile...other than maybe Burke or Iriarte stuff-wise.  Prelander Berroa would be a huge stretch to push into the rotation...but at least there's upside/potential.

Remember, we can't count on Schultz or Smith for next season, period.  Nor Grant Taylor.

Obviously, there's a difference. The Sox are rebuilding, this isn't a surprise. I'm not sure why you're throwing shade on Perez. Weird that you're picking on the one Hispanic guy in the rotation.

You have 5 guys who are penciled into the OD rotation. Shane Smith is a possibility for starts. Thorpe has "discomfort", so until he's put on the IL, I'll count him. Iriarte, Wikelman, Nastrini, Bush. Last year, you really had 5 options, and one wasn't ready to start the season. I'll say this year you have 7 realistic options, and one might be down. There is nobody in the Sox' top 10 options that Clevenger is worth replacing.

Chris Flexen's still out there if somebody comes up short.

I'm not understanding. Cannon, Martin, Perez, Wilson and Burke seem like the likeliest 5 contenders for the rotation. I don't think Schultz, Hagen Smith or Grant Taylor are realistic candidates for the OD roster. I've not heard Berroa being discussed as a starter, and I think they like Shuster in long relief. Iriarte and Nastrini are both kind of "next man up", as is Ky Bush.

Well obviously Clevinger, Thorpe and now Perez.

Just a joke about how SD guys struggle with the Sox (Hill for example) but excel when going the other direction (Cease), or to another team.

Marinara Sauce might very well be the next find.

Clevinger had a great year post Padres stint. Thorpe literally never pitched even in the minors for the Padres. Perez has literally never pitched for the White Sox. I'm not sure that holds up there caulfield.

Clevinger could also never stay consistently healthy enough to be trade worthy...if someone would actually assume that PR risk.  SD was elated to get out from under that trade/contract.  "Great" is pushing it...better than expected.  And we paid him twice or three times as much as we are willing to pay FA starters as of today.

The larger point is SD hardly gives away starters that amount to much, ultimately. Quantrill might be the very best in the last decade.

Relievers are a totally different story, though.
