Expand Usually about 25% or so. It's more based on the special tests and how much laxity is involved. If it's a complete tear they will do surgery right away but those are rare. Those are from traumatic injuries like falling or car accidents. Most ligaments heal. There a few exceptions but the UCL isn't one of them. He misses the season even in the best case scenario. Having surgery now, he is still ready for spring training next year. Longer term injury with TJS and there's a non-zero chance he never see a MLB roster again. Think he would be right at 40 days with the DL time. My guess is that's why they did it. Or there's something else in the CBA that allows him to properly/pay for rehab on 25 man/MLB IL vs MiLB/40man. Expand I'm still waiting for this long list of guys who had TJS and came back in 12 months, by the way. That's even with the supposedly new techniques. I even tracked down this compiled Google Doc list of players who had TJS and when they came back, and the number of pitchers who come back and pitch in under 13 months is almost 0. With the newer techniques, you can see that its dropping to 14-16 months more often now, so having it now might mean he's able to start rehab appearances next May-June, although that can still be rushing it for some guys (Crochet for example). I don’t think anyone here is acting like these aren’t people and that we view these pitchers as meat assets to do with what we want. I think this messageboard sees this exact issue happen with the white Sox over and over whereas it seems the rest of the league is over it and gets the procedure done when they see the warning signs. There are plenty of cases where they won't do it right away. Rest and rehab is the proper protocol. Surgery is always the last resort. In this case he will be ready for spring training either way.
