Always do a couple of months of rest and rehab first

I know the majority of people on here just want to cut and push the athletes like pieces of meat but they are people. You avoid surgery at all costs, first.

Even if there is an actual tear in there?  Like how much of a tear is acceptable?

Usually about 25% or so. It's more based on the special tests and how much laxity is involved.

If it's a complete tear they will do surgery right away but those are rare. Those are from traumatic injuries like falling or car accidents.

Most ligaments heal. There a few exceptions but the UCL isn't one of them.

Well if only it was a couple months then. Except it's been 5 months. I'm sure Ky isn't happy to lose an entire other year to his development either.

I can’t really blame them for not wanting to get cut open. Makes sense to see if rest can wait.

For sure. But it seems like there is a disconnect during the offseason. I cannot be convinced the most optimal time for surgery just coincidentally happens to be the first day of Spring Training for multiple pitchers now.

Yeah, I get it. I’m sure there some that would rather just go ahead and do it to come back sooner.

He would have missed it either way with a 9-12 month rehab.

Better to try the conservative route first

Reading between the lines here, does this mean the Sox already knew that Bush did and still waited?  Or did they just figure out that he did?

No that's not really how it works. They wouldn't have burned an option year late last year if they knew he was hurt. These guys try to avoid surgery at all costs.

They seemed to know by end of last year. To quote someone

pretty bizarre move

Even if did happen in September, if he rehabs for 2 months on the fast end and decides on surgery, the earliest he would be back is the end of August, more likely Sept/Oct.

He misses the season even in the best case scenario.

Having surgery now, he is still ready for spring training next year.

Either way he misses 2025.

Trying to figure out why the difference between his and Bush's situation that brought your original comment.  It was a distinction for a reason.  Why?

"The Sox selected Ky Bush's contract from Triple-A Charlotte, activated Dominic Leone from the 60-day injured list, and optioned Prelander Berroa and Sammy Peralta to Charlotte"...that was the original move in August, totally forgot those guys existed except Berroa.

September 15th last year he was put on IL for TJS...one day after being recalled from Charlotte.  Then activated Oct 1 makes zero sense except as a roster management move.

40 days service time gets you the limited MLB pension. Longer term injury with TJS and there's a non-zero chance he never see a MLB roster again. Think he would be right at 40 days with the DL time. My guess is that's why they did it. Or there's something else in the CBA that allows him to properly/pay for rehab on 25 man/MLB IL vs MiLB/40man.

I'm still waiting for this long list of guys who had TJS and came back in 12 months, by the way. That's even with the supposedly new techniques.

I even tracked down this compiled Google Doc list of players who had TJS and when they came back, and the number of pitchers who come back and pitch in under 13 months is almost 0.

With the newer techniques, you can see that its dropping to 14-16 months more often now, so having it now might mean he's able to start rehab appearances next May-June, although that can still be rushing it for some guys (Crochet for example).

If he had the surgery in December, then you could tell me he's possibly ready for Spring Training next year.

Yea but his timeline for 2026 is pushed up so you are looking at a possible spring training comeback instead of mid 26.  I don’t think anyone here is acting like these aren’t people and that we view these pitchers as meat assets to do with what we want.  I think this messageboard sees this exact issue happen with the white Sox over and over whereas it seems the rest of the league is over it and gets the procedure done when they see the warning signs.  You act as if we all make up the “rest and rehab and TJS” jokes with zero basis to it when it seems like it happens every year to this organization

About 25% of all TJS happen in March and April. It's throughout the game.

If the rest of the league does that except in the case of a significant tear then it's borderline malpractice. There are plenty of cases where they won't do it right away.

Rest and rehab is the proper protocol. Surgery is always the last resort.

In this case he will be ready for spring training either way. Even if they did it right away, he wasn't going to be ready for 2025.

Yes I’m sure the entire league is performing malpractice and the Sox are just the good guys protecting their guys against the evils of the rest of the game.  They aren’t properly assessing their players and taking correct action like the white Sox are.  It’s everyone else that’s wrong 👍

well can’t wait for the next “rest and rehab WHOOPS HOW THIS HAPPEN AGAIN TO US

alas it just happens to the league nbd”
