It's a good thing the Sox picked him up to be the weak side of a platoon, and you agree that he looks pretty good for that.

Once again, I don’t care what a 32 year old vet does as a weak side of a RF platoon in what will be a losing season.  If he was 25 with 5+ more years of control, great.

I’d rather give those at bats to a player that may still be here a year from now.  I’m not sure what is so difficult to understand about that?

The record has already been set, haha.  Too late.  Once again, may as well see what younger guys can do at this point.  And it doesn’t have to be Colas.  There will probably be more interesting DFA’s to play than Slater.  Remember that both Victor Robles and Joey Bart were early season DFA’s last year.  Unfortunately, Getz passed on both guys.  Apparently, our outfield talent was just too good last year and Getz still had faith in Oldy Moldy.  🤣

Not giving up on the record.

The Sox will pay for it by Colson not wanting to resign with the Sox, or a action like that is a big step to turning Colson into a Clubhouse cancer.

I'm telling you; Colson is not gonna be happy about it.

Colson should play better then. He hasn't remotely earned a big league roster spot and putting him in the bigs out of ST would be organizational malpractice.

The Sox would love nothing more than to feel like Colson is ready to give the job to.  They are looking for any thread of success to point at to give even a sliver of hope to people.  They are doing everything they can to get these guys up here.

Slater and Tauchman and Taylor are all 30 ish, lack power.   And even when they were good, they were the useful sort, but weren't that good.  Benintendi is in that class too (although he has had some good seasons).  They haven't exactly "earned it" themselves this spring.    It's just overkill.
It's not crowding out serious prospects, but there still is a chance with Fletcher or Colas.    Heck, NRI Calvin Mitchell is more interesting than some of those guys.    Plus, we have some young infielders who could play some outfield....versatility is becoming a thing.

You're forgetting Jankowski will somehow be shoehorned in here as well...

Five great seasons?  I would hope a player who had five great seasons would have better career OPS than .728.  If he only ever faces lefties, his .793 career OPS versus lefties looks good.  In the grand scheme of things, I’d still rather use those at bats on a younger outfielder.

Expand

He’s a fucking weak side platoon OF.  From 2019 to 2023, he put up a .862 OPS and 137 wRC+ against LHP over 662 plate appearances.  That’s 16th overall for players with over 600 PA’s against LHP during this time.

The 15 players above him were Paul Goldschmidt, Yordy Alvarez, JD Martinez, Yandy Diaz, Ketel Marte, Teoscar Hernandez, Jose Altuve, Nelson Cruz, Manny Machado, Mookie Betts, Trea Turner, Jose Abreu, Nick Castellanos, Xander Bogaerts, & Carlos Correa.  I guess those guys also suck despite the 545 career fWAR from them.

Again, I don’t have a problem if you think the upside of Slater from a trade chip perspective is not worth committing playing time to.  But saying he is now bad with certainty and/or was never very good at his isolated role is ridiculous.

Slater very well may be a better player than Colas, but why should that matter? Of the 2, there is only one that potentially can help them when and if they are ever good again. Colas was a top 100 prospect. Struggled initially. Played dumb, but played hard, and for some reason, ever since, the White Sox f*** with him. Either give him a shot or release him. It makes no sense doing to him what they are doing. If he has a bad attitude, why are you letting your other prospects be exposed to it.

Expand

Slater makes less than a $1M over the league minimum.  If Colas warrants a major league look, we can trade or cut Slater.  The problem is Colas was more than 10% below league average as a hitter in the International League last year despite playing half his games in a bandbox and being a no glove corner OF.  Why in the world would just hand him a major league opportunity and expect a different outcome?  If Fuller has some plan for Colas, then give him a month or two in Charlotte to prove himself and then make a call to put him on the major league roster or DFA his ass when the 40 man spot is needed.  In the interim, play the veteran who hopefully won’t contribute to the worst offense in Major League Baseball history.

And to be very clear, I do not like having signed both Slater & Taylor.  It should have been one or the other.  Having both on a rebuilding club, unless Robert is moved early into the year, doesn’t make a lick of sense.

Because Colas has -1.4 bWAR in 278 at bats in the majors, while only managing a career .774 OPS in 735 PAs in a AAA bandbox. He needs to figure that level out first before he gets a longer shot at the majors, or they need to release him.

100% this.  Doesn’t have to be a full year of results either, give me a solid four weeks and we can trade cut one of Tauchman, Slater, or Taylor.

It’s the combination of a few things.  He’s the weak side of a platoon facing lefties so he won’t get all that much playing time anyways.  He is also 32 and has more than likely declined so he may not do what you say again.  Like you said, he likely won’t be traded for diddly squat either, regardless of how he performs.  You are losing time to evaluate other young players that could amount to something in what will be a losing season.  I just see no point in playing Slater.  Hell, I wouldn’t be starting Tauchman either.  I know they both signed for a pittance but horrible teams should be evaluating talent, not giving at bats to old ass veterans with a maximum of one year lifetimes with the team.

For old players, common sense means ignore entire track records of success and focus only on spring results.  For young players, ignore all track records of failure and bad spring training results and instead focus only on “age”.  Make it make sense…

We gave Colas & Fletcher full seasons in AAA and the majors last year and they failed spectacularly.  There is nothing else to evaluate.  Being “young” is not a predictor of future success.  Again, Slater may not work out, but I can see the logic of what they are going for there.  Chris Getz can’t afford another 120 loss season.  Giving playing time to unqualified prospects is GM suicide.  You have already decided Getz is incompetent one year into the job (and he might be) despite inheriting a disaster of an organization.  Imagine how quickly you’ll get your pitchfork out if it happens again.  It’s easy to suggest high risk, high reward moves when your ass isn’t on the line.  Getz has to find value with a Kmart level budget.  Again, getting 2 wins out of LF for less than $4M would be a great way to improve the team without blocking any real prospects.   When he starts blocking real prospects, I will be right there with you in calling him out.

Like, I get where you're coming from, respect your opinion, and generally agree with your takes, but the Sox are going to suck ass no matter who they play. There is literally no upside in playing shitty vets on one year deals that aren't good enough to return anything of note even id they play well. So what's the point? To lose 107 games instead of 112? It doesn't matter. Chances are that Colas and Fletcher and Sosa aren't good major leaguers, but there is no reason not to find out when this season is already punted.

here is to hoping Fletcher and Colas earn their way in AAA, because both should get a ton of MLb at bats in 25.

There's an above zero chance Colas is around in 5 years.

There is a zero chance that any of the 1 year older FAs are around.
