This is more than your simple hand wave.  We can see what we have in the system and who is left to trade.  We also have decades of free agent history here to base future expectations off of.

We also know we trail all but one ALCentral team in MiLB systems in the vast majority of the system rankings, which is also important to note here, as it means we aren't just chasing 40-50 games now, we are also behind in future expectations.

If anything the idea that everything will just work out is the one that seems suspect.

But if your system's ranked top 6, and 3 other divisional systems are ranked anywhere between 1-8, you're really not that far "behind".

I guess what I’m saying is the best case outcome for us is a rotation of Martin, Cannon, Burke, Smith, & Thorpe with Perez, Wilson, & Gilbert in the bullpen.  It’s very possible or even likely one of those first five guys struggles, but we won’t know until they’re given a chance.  I’d much rather see the low ceiling vets  get forced to the bullpen and make starts when needed vs. vice versa.

I don't disagree in concept but after last year they are going to try to win at least some. Building a pitching staff if all things are relatively equal will usually lend itself to adding the variety.

Im not saying I necessarily agree but that's what teams usually do.

Josh Nelson not thinking Sosa would make the OD roster until recently is quite the miss as well.  At least Fegan & Margulas outlined why he should get a shot.

That would be interesting. That's a good deal of pressure on a rookie. We've seen what playing rookies away from their natural positions has done in the past. Hopefully, it won't be for too long.

Expand

Meidroth played a lot of SS last year.  I don’t think it will be that unnatural for him, just more that he lacks the range to likely be a long-term option at SS.

I still disagree. You can say history if FA signings but didn't they set the record for a contract with Albert Belle?

Besides I'm not talking about a massive signing filling in with good players when they have budget space and a good pitching staff.

I think the budget space is the key.

Expand

If the best example of a quality free agent signing happened a generation and a half ago, I think that makes that argument for me.

That's what I mean. His position for the MLB. Don't want him taking those defensive struggles to the plate if he isn't at least decent out there.

You are chasing 40 to 50 games in this division AND you are behind in the quickest way to catch them.  Yes, you are that far behind.

I don't consider being 2 slots behind another team in subjective farm system rankings to be "behind" in player development. They're basically equal.

Now, as for the 40-50 games part, yes, they are behind.

And the history shows it will be mid tier players who don't get us over the top.  But keep handwaving.

There is an alt universe where we sign one of Machado or Bryce, add a big SP and make a WS and become a fun, destination type club. Instead we got...this s%*#.

Handwaving? Does that mean saying history people?

Nice attacking the opinion instead of talking about the issues. Good distraction.

Historcally, how often does the team have a payroll not in the top half of the league? That leaves a lot of room to get  many players to build a good team.

The middle of that crap sandwich is exactly as you noted. Not only did we not spend big on excellent players, we spent too much on crap players including for some strange reason a bunch of relievers.

Pretty clear what's happened here the last 10 years or so.

Albert Belle's contract was almost 30 years ago. It would be silly to hold that up as some shining example, since it was probably the last time JR paid top dollar for a premiere FA.  It is the outlier, and not JR's norm.

We don't know when, or if, Jerry will approve of a higher overall budget again either. History up until the past few seasons suggests he will, but with the Ishbia news, Jerry very well might want to keep payrolls low as team control changes hands. None of us know how he will operate for the next few years.

I don't understand why Nelson is upset about him not making the team. He missed like 8 games. I thought everyone wanted them to stop rushing people?

I don't get it either.  He didn't earn the job, and hasn't been healthy.  Nothing about the season he had last year should override that thought.

The Twitter meltdown is quite amusing.  I get there is theoretical draft compensation if he places top two in ROY or top three in MVP voting, but there is zero reason to expect that at the moment.  He simply needs more time in AAA to show he’s even ready for a shot.  Glad that Getz sent him down early to avoid any chance of this becoming a debate again towards the end of camp.
