I sense some projection on your end. I'd argue that the vast majority of people overly sensitive to allegations of racism are, in fact, racist. If you called me racist, I'd laugh, probably not even address it, and forget about it in 5 minutes. Why? Because I'm not racist.

Lololol.

Anyway, this signing still sucks.

2025 and the Cork and Kerry's going suburbanite crew at Soxtalk still thinks "living in your mom's basement" is a solid insult. Nice work Dick, the 68 year plumber who still hasn't retired.

I can admit I have no plumbing talent. In fact, I hate things like replacing water heaters and roofs. Hate clearing snow, hate cutting grass. So wr live in a condo and have all that stuff done for us.

(James Fegan/Sox Machine)

PHOENIX — Since we have a robust comment section, the negative fan reaction to the White Sox bringing back Mike Clevinger on a minor league deal doesn’t need to be theorized, just observed. As a result, it does make asking Chris Getz if he weighed the inevitable blow-back of the move fairly straightforward.

The comfort is not just stated, but shown, because the language around Clevinger is not of a star-level contributor that is worth taking a public relations hit for, but rather someone getting a chance to prove they’ve still got something. Executives and coaches usually public state their confidence that a pitcher can stick as a starter until the last possible moment. But in this case, the possibility of Clevinger converting to relief began to sound more like the accepted plan by the time Getz and Will Venable were done talking.

“It’ll be great to see what it looks like in a shortened role and see how he bounces back and responds,” Venable said. “We hope that there’s something there that we can use.”  (my own comment:  usually not great for guys with two TJS in their past, especially back-to-backs, see Kendall Graveman's and Joe Kelly's struggles with this as well)

“The stuff was there,” said Getz, who said Clevinger shared his pitch data with them in addition to holding a throwing session for scouts. “We are open minded in terms of role. I know he is as well. I’ve always had a little bit of a curiosity of what it could look like in a bullpen role. He’s someone that wants a look and we are willing to give him one.”

If he’s going to work as a reliever, why didn’t they just sign a RP to the same deal?

At least half of these guys have already signed in the last couple of weeks....and no way with Kimbrel after what happened in 2021, but there HAS to be a fit here somewhere with ONE of these guys.

Trevor Gott signed today. Other relievers have signed since Clevinger signing.

If Clevinger isn't going to be an innings eater, there is even less than zero reason for him to be here.  I won't argue with the idea that we need a starter who can get you 6 or 7 when the kids fail in sequence,  but if they aren't going to use Clev that way, it's an even worse signing.

Lance Lynn as closer, lol?

Whit Merrifield still on the market...someone will definitely sign JD Martinez, pretty soon.  Same with Rizzo.

Funny that Grossman, Pillar (just signed with TEX) and Jose Abreu were all on this particular list.  Grandal, too.

Gibson, Quintana, Spencer Turnbull the last "name" pitchers to go before the before bottom/dregs.

Jose Iglesias the one that I wanted to sign all along for SS, but seems they're determined to run Colson out there OD.  Even then, would have preferred him to Josh Rojas.

I'd take Kimbrel over Clev 11 days out of 10.

And really, I'd rather watch a blown save by Kimbrel than an immaculate inning by Clevenger.

He's blowing his HoF chances by hanging on too long.

If he left the game at his peak...would have made it arguably.

Same with Kenley Jansen and maybe even Hader.

Hader's 30 years old. He had a bad 2 months in San Diego in 2022. His next 2 seasons were his normal fare.

He went through one very rough patch with Milwaukee too...Hader's an interesting case, because he was more of a high-leverage, multiple innings lefty the first part of his career and didn't pile up massive save numbers.

I'm not sure how that translates to "hanging on too long". Same with Jansen. They're both very effective relievers who are still getting paid.

Effective, very effective and "HoF" are too quite different issues, though.

Jansen's strikeout rate dropped from "elite" to "very good" after his age 29 season. Closers get in for racking up saves. If Jansen sticks around for a couple more seasons, hits 500 saves he has a great argument for the HOF.

Josh Hader is 2 seasons away from qualifying for the Hall of Fame, so if he's already stuck around "too long", then he's SOL.

Just going say for the record that Kimbrel's unlikely to make the HoF now.

Jansen probably 40-45% chance...maybe he gets in, eventually.

Better than Lee Smith, for example...but it's not an open and shut case.
