The only reason I think maybe it would be a problem is because of what was mentioned earlier in the thread, in which it was noted that JR lost a ton of juice when he tried to block Manfred.

But what does JR gain in return for being the "bad" guy this go-around?  Vengeance against some owners?  Against the union?  I sure hope he isn't obsessed with that mindset in his last years of life.  If he thought he could do something that would "save the game" or the likes then yeah...but would he really want to go out as the "hatchet man"?

Yeah I think it will be longer than some are hoping for. It isn't going to be that instant. However, I think it could be by end of 2026 whenever the agreement ends with the MLBPA (I'm pretty sure the last one expired in December).

Ishbia is only 47 so he could wait a few years.

Ishy is an investor at this point. Managing partner could come up later if Jerry wants to step aside. Could be a few more years.

People still haven't forgiven Jerry for 1994.  if this is going to be as ugly and bloody as people claim, blame going to someone who is leaving the picture if very convenient for everyone else.  This doesn't mean they won't be on the same basic page, but it will be Jerry with the knife, and not the new owners.

Expand

Ishbia doesn't strike me as someone who wants to hold the players down. He's buying a team to win and for fun. If anything, he'll want to act like a big market owner so I just don't see the benefit of having a small-market representation at the table.

Maybe I'm an asshole, but I don't think an 89 year old (and if it's few years, a 92 or 93 year old or whatever) should be running anything.

That's a fair take, this is just mostly me reading tea leaves.

Everyone hopes anyway.

My guess is this is how this will all play out:

  1. Ishbia buys out minority shareholders this Friday…Ishbia will assume  +50% ownership of team but control will remain with Jerry
  2. Capital call for remaining shareholders to help finance new stadium…team control passes to Ishbia and he receives ROFR on Reinsdorf shares
  3. Jerry passes and his sons liquidate their holdings at elevated multiple…Ishbia secures full ownership through new agreement or ROFR

The first part we will know about in the next couple weeks.  How and when control passes to Jerry is the big wild card.

This. I went to an article someone posted around here and it said there was a 98 year old on the board. Like what the hell is this.

Sure. Don't ever ask that question.

Look at what the brother did in Phoenix. Changed the whole team, has the highest payroll in the league. Team got worse.

Expand

He brought on elite talent who didn't mesh.

If that's our problem here, OK. That would be way better than having the worst team in the sports history.

The key point was that the team got worse. Regardless of the reason.

He asked if can it get any worse.

Hopefully, not. But don't ever ask that question. Because it's always possible.

The suns were just in a conference finals. It's much easier to get "worse" than that.

Sure. But even compared to the previous years they were worse.

Let's hope that new ownership will help. It's not a guarantee though.

Everyone down there is pissed because they took a good team tore it apart and made it worse.

They absolutely were not pissed when they went and acquired three of the top players available in the offseason lmao.  The Suns results aren’t indicative of the owners messing with anything, they let the GM spend what he wanted to spend and it’s not working out due to injury

What does the issue of an expiring lease do for/against JR? Does it make the team more/less valuable?  I get that many of us want a shiny new park (I DO!!)...but what impact would it have on the value of the franchise if JR decided to sign a lease for the use of the current park for 10 or 20 years?

They weren't pissed with the moves made. It looked good. Talk to them now. They are angry.

One even responded on a white sox podcast when a Phoenix hosts was on to complain.

Regardless, the point being it can get worse at anytime.

White Sox fans are so miserable that when news leaks that the team may get a new owner, we're arguing on a message board that maybe we don't want a rich owner who has a history of spending because it might get worse.  You know the expression "The grass isn't always greener?"  Well, in this case, there's actual grass over there vs. a barren desert with nothing but tumbleweeds and dust devils here and now.

Based on the entire history of baseball, it is quite literally impossible to get worse than last year.

Word to the wise. The Bill's new joint is about half done. The cost was about $1.4 B when they started now they say it will cost $2.2 B. The owner Pegula pays the overage.

Since they set the new record for losses in a season, it is categorically untrue that they can't set the record again. They literally did it last year.

Again we hope it's not going to happen, it likely won't happen but never say it can't get worse.

Last years team proved it can.

Yeah, that is always a point of contention with building. Who covers the cost over runs.
