Sure and they were also facing 88mph heaters. Thing about the old days is they the old days.

Moncada just has bad luck and is injury prone. Eloy never cared to be in shape imo.

I worry about what's in their heads. Maybe nothing.

I dunno if you can really tell what's in a person's heart, maybe Rendon's, but I never got the impression that Moncada was just milkin it. I think you have to just feel sorry for both him and Eloy. Fell sorry about ourselves, the joke is ultimately on us, but I don't think I have any reason to question his desire. Maybe he ate too much candy. Then again, these players seemed to get hurt a whole lot less when they weren't constantly lifting weights and were subsisting on a diet of beer, chewing tobacco, steak dinners and sunflower seeds.

Moncada looks outwardly he has all the passion of a corpse at a wake

The joke we should have guffawed at was from Passan's article way back in 2016 when he originally signed with Boston about eating too many Twinkies.

That was an early indication.

We can’t tell what’s in a person’s heart, but if you didn’t get the impression he had no heart, not sure what didn’t give you that impression

I think Ozzie made a good point once upon a time: you can’t pull fat.

I don’t think these guys aren’t working hard enough, I think they care very much about what they do, especially the aforementioned players, but I wonder if they’re working on the right things.
What do I know, I’m not in my best shape, but I don’t think I’m going to get injured running the bases — and I’m a fair amount older than Eloy. I think if he was lying, his employer might’ve realized it. Might’ve said something. It’s a bit of money on the line. I wonder why they paid Vaughn $6mil or whatever.

I think some players don’t work hard, just not sure you could say it about some of the recent Sox. Seems like they’re all trying their best, just that their best isn’t good enough. It’s a good life lesson.

He looked like one of the least athletic guys doing just about anything other than swinging a bat any time he was on the field.  Problem is, he thought he was good at everything else that came along with the game of baseball.  His performance in the field proved he wasn't.  Maybe if he just accepted he was just a DH and nothing else. maybe he wouldn't have been injured all the time.

Gosh, I’m just thinking….i don’t have a body like that. Eloy specifically looks great. Dude is a hunk, my opinion is unchanged regardless of what he says about his momma. He says nice things, bonus points.  I don’t work out. But it clearly takes work to produce that body. Thus I think they spent all their time lifting weights instead of swinging a bat. I think there’s a meme on this forum about this. Probably should’ve been focusing on other things, ie swinging a bat. I’m wondering about Lenyn…he’s looked nice over the last ~100ab I’ve seen him take….but the “development path” seems similar to Eloy: lift a ton of weights, then learn how to play baseball. Perhaps one should come before the other.

It’s all relative, and it’s a bottom line business.

I 100% agree. Robert too. I don't really think these guys were optimizing their body for baseball.

I'm 41 now, but in my 20's I was 6'5" and typically around 220-230.  I lifted a few times a week for most of my 20's, but never took my cardio very seriously and if you asked me to run a mile without stopping it would probably take me 8 minutes, but I sure looked like I was in shape.  It's easy to look the part if you're tall and have good genetics and still be in miserable cardio condition.

If you were running an 8 minute mile at 6’5, you’re cardio was pretty great. It’s not 5 miles in 40 minutes, but that was pretty good.

I mean, you can basically walk a mile in 10 minutes at a pretty decent pace if you're in somewhat decent shape.  So I agree with Crede, 8 isn't killing it by any means.

I’d like to see you demonstrate that. If you’re a professional race walker, then sure.

A fast walk is a 15-minute mile.

An 8:00 mile is moderately fast. For someone who is in decent shape (not a lot of extra weight), they could do one mile in 8:00.

For sure, the point of my post was if you saw me you'd think I was in shape, but if I was doing any taxing cardio stuff I would be gassed pretty quickly.  Eloy looked the part, but his body couldn't handle the full rigors of a baseball season.

Just to note, I”d say an 8 min mile is moving pretty good. Most people are gonna be pretty happy being able to move that fast, that’s athletic. And especially a 24 min 5k. That aside, baseball is not really an aerobic sport. Especially endurance not really needed. Just strength and fitness overall.

Don't sell yourself short.  There are a LOT of people who couldn't hit an eight minute mile, and that is speaking as someone who broke 5 minutes in college a long time ago.  I would bet a vast majority of people couldn't do it.  Hell I couldn't do it today.

An 8 min mile might be pretty good for an average human, for an MLB outfielder it's pathetic.  I would argue it's way more aerobic than you're making it out to be, the guy couldn't get to first base without pulling up lame, I'm simply trying to make the point that looking good with your shirt off and being "in shape" are two very different things.
