Apparently we have new City Connect jerseys coming? I thought we had the 2nd best in the league.. so kinda disappointed to lose the old

Conspiracy theory; they’re not gonna say “southside” [sic], they won’t even correctly read “south side”, and I think they’re testing the waters for a move. At least out of Bridgeport.

They went the way of Tim Anderson.

There was another post I read that said “Anderson was cut” and probably they’re talking about Justin, or whatever the not-so-good lefty on our staff is named, but I don’t think they were talking about Tim. I was worried.

Spring training numbers are…..ok. Seems like he’s hitting it the other way and even has some power. Hit a homer. 2 maybe? I think his career is not done especially if he can play all over the infield and the corner outfield. We’ll see, I guess.

I’m excited to see Ryan Fuller and how the position players perform at the plate during his tenure here. Brain Bannister’s impact was immediate but I think hitting is much harder than pitching.

Fathom is definitely a hater.  I think he still has PSTD from Madrigal and doesn’t buy that Meidroth has any sort of power.  It’s a fair concern.

The power concern is fair but Meidroth has triple plus plate discipline to go with his incredible bat to ball skills whereas Madrigal was just a high contact hitter.  That difference is incredibly important.  ZiPS projects him to put up a .360 OBP as a rookie.  Even with 7 to 10 HRs that’s an above league average hitter.

Boston already has Campbell and Hamilton for second base…but would love to know how hard they fought to keep Meidroth once the first two pieces were agreed upon.

Good question.  Meidroth is such a unique prospect that I’m not sure front offices know exactly how to value him.  Projections models love him due to his OBP skills with Steamer 600 projecting him for 2.9 fWAR this year (the highest on the team).  At the same time, from a pure scouting perspective, he’s not going to wow anyone with all his tools in the 40 to 45 range outside of the hit tool.  But IMO, you can’t ignore what is effectively 80 grade plate discipline.  I think that combined with his plus hit tool provides a very high floor.  If he can add some strength, then I think he can become a fairly impactful hitter.  He will obviously never be a big power guy, but if he could get closer to a .130 ISO by hitting 25 doubles & 15 HRs, then I think you’re looking at a potential All Star.

I personally think a guy with a high floor and some potential ceiling should be worth quite a bit, but I could some front offices worrying about whether the elite OBP will carry into the majors and feeling he’s more of a reserve infielder type in the long-run.

A .360 OBP would have been top 20 in baseball last year. Don't see how that can be a reasonable projection

How many rookies with let’s say under 12 homers but .360+ obp can there be in recent years?

just 20 hitters had a 360+ obp last year

Seems odd that they'd project a rookie with zero MLB ABs to those kind of numbers

Meidroth had a .437 OBP in AAA last year, they are basically assuming his BB rate drops from 18.8% to 13.7% and his batting average drops from .290 to .243 (due to both K rate increase and BABIP decrease).  To be honest, those projections don’t seem all that crazy to me.

Didn’t finish my thought: I’m excited to see the impact it has at guys at the ML level but really to see how it affects the development of guys like Wolkow, Zavala, and Bonemer.

The bats in the system do leave a lot to be desired, not a lot of high ceiling guys, but there’s some interesting clay to be molded. It seems like Getz and Shirley are targeting guys with OBP skills in the draft and trades which is a good place to start, and a welcome change from the last regime
