Can someone explain to me how this free agent/salary cap thing works? A guy in the lunchroom was talking about how the Lakers would be the only team to offer Kobe the most $$ because he currently plays for them and that another team can not offer him as much because of a salary cap? I have no idea of anything basketball.. Someone explain please..?

I can't remember what the NBA's salary cap is, but say it is $50 million. A team can resign its own free agents at any price even if they are over the cap. In order to sign another team's FA's you have to be that much under the cap. (if not you can only offer the minimum, or you get one except every two years about about $4.5 mil, or a low level exception at just over $1 mil) Also if you are over the cap, you can only do a trade with a team that is under the cap, or else the salaries have to be within 10% of each other when compared to each other. It is pretty confusing, but the NBA's teams have never been fiscally healthier.

OK.. If Kobe is a free agent (is he?) he can walk away from the Lakers, right?

Take another offer from another team?

He can leave the Lakers for any offfer, if he is an unrestricted free agent. Problem is if he is looking for say $15 mil a year, then a team would have to be $15 mil a year underneath the salary cap to do it. The only teams that are that far under, suck.

LINK Heres a link to anything you would ever want to know about the salary cap. As far as resigning players to whatever contract you want, that is not entirely true. It used to be but with the new CBA there is maximum salaries. Now, Kevin Garnett can exceed the maximum because he was already making more than the max and players are entitled to up to 12.5% raises under the Larry Bird rule.

If Memphis is far enough under the cap don't be surprised to see Kobe sign there. I know he and Jerry West have a good relationship and that West would love to bring him over to Memphis.
