Maybe one reason the Orioles won't trade these guys for elite pitching is that nobody wants them after multiple failures in MLB and spring training:

I call BS on this.  The guy hit .293 with a .964 OPS and 25 homers last year in the minors.  Meanwhile, we are hoping one of our top position prospects that hit .214/.710 last year can save our lineup, and that’s only IF his back issues ever fully clear up.  Or that a guy with no position or glove will actually start to hit in the majors after 591 garbage plate appearances in the majors.

Ripping on Mayo but having hope for guys like Vargas and Colson is the peak of hypocrisy.

Afterall, if the Orioles are that unwell off with Mayo, what does that say about the Sox with players like Vargas and Colson?

Vargas and Sosa made adjustments and had good springs. Mayo felt entitled to a spot, sucked, then was surprised that he didn't make a World Series Caliber team. Maybe the Limo that took him to and from the games wasn't stocked with enough top shelf liquor. Maybe Ryan Fuller was the key to unlocking these guys, and they unceremoniously dumped him for thinking outside the box. Oh well, our gain.

You are hyping up 37 ST plate appearances each for Vargas and Sosa.  You did this last year as well and we all saw what happened.

Regardless, not one team in baseball is trading a Coby Mayo for a Colson Montgomery, Sosa, or Vargas, because of a tiny sample size of ST plate appearances.

The larger sample size of actual meaningful MLB plate appearances tells a more reliable story.

Miguel Vargas (age 25) — .586 OPS in 591 career MLB PA

Lenny Sosa (age 25) — .604 OPS in 578 career MLB PA

Coby Mayo (age 23) — .293 OPS in 46 career MLB PA

I know which player I would pick out of those three in a split second, and I wouldn’t need to ask Ryan Fuller.  He’d take Mayo too.  But if Fuller is truly the solution, why didn’t Mayo have more success in his small sample size in the majors last season?

I think the primary issue is that he doesn't have a position. He is basically a DH. Not much demand for a 23 year old DH. It really limits his value.

It limits his value to the Orioles, because they already have Henderson Westburg and Holliday.

Basallo's in the same basic position stacked up behind Rutschman...limiting both those guys to 1B/DH roles.

Mayo on the White Sox would be given third base to play his way off of, probably RF (because of his 60+ arm) and then LF/1B/DH.

Exactly, and look who the Sox have starting at 3B anyways — a guy who wears his glove on his head for the most part.

Mayo came up as subject in potential Crochet trade, not sure how Vargas is relevant. Should be comparing to Teel and Montgomery. It is within realm of possibility Getz didn't think an O's offering that centered on Mayo was good enough and held out for the better deal.

I'm not hyping anybody. It's just weird the Orioles have a bunch of guys who won't hit above .150 unless they get their favorite color M&Ms or are promised "world series game 1 starter" in order to listen to their coaches. I can see why Ryan Fuller was happy to flee that organization.

Yeah, that's a short list of White Sox dudes who just keep their heads down and run through walls for their coaches, and an entitled do nothing. At least he'll have that first 2024 week in Charlotte.

Holliday and Basallo both had pretty good springs, but that probably doesn’t mean much either way, just like it probably doesn’t for Vargas and Sosa.

Ultimately, do you really think Vargas and Sosa are going to have better MLB careers than guys like Holliday, Mayo, and Basallo, regardless of your concocted anecdotes?

It seems like Vargas and Sosa are doing everything their coaches have asked of them, and more. Mayo seems happy to go to the press with his "unhappiness" that he didn't get the red M&Ms taken out of his pre-game spread. And at this point, Jackson Holliday looks more like Nicky Lopez with orange traffic cones on his arms in the field. Coby Mayo looks like the active ingredient of sleeping on a cold garage slab set to music. Maybe one of these guys will play some major league ball before they're 30. Maybe they're already filming a "Spinal Tap" style documentary about this Orioles team.

Sure Mayo has more trade value than either  Vargas or Sosa; but it's not enough to attract top shelf pitching...perhaps a mid-rotation guy on a short contract in July.  But he's not the profile that the Sox need to trade for anyway, so I don't care about him.

I'll be very happy if one of either Vargas or Sosa turns into a real major league hitter.

Honestly who cares about guys we ended up not trading for? We made our deals and got the guys we got. Way too early to do what ifs.

I'd rather have Teel, Montgomery and Meidroth than a Mayo centered package with secondary pieces like Beavers that were being discussed anyway. Braden looks like he could develop into an absolute 5 tool beast while Teel looks close to can't miss. I don't think I'd trade either one of them straight up for Mayo. If they would have taken Fedde for him he'd probably be preferable to Vargas but that still remains to be seen in actuality.

I tend to agree I would rather have the Red Sox package, however Mayo is a slam dunk preferable over Vargas.

We already know Vargas sucks, his 500 MLB at bats tell us this. I am not going to look at 30 spring training at bats and think its finally clicked.

Mayo should be in the majors. No idea what the Orioles are doing - they apparently can't or don't want to use him in a deal to acquire pitching, so what's the point in letting him rot in AAA when he's already mastered that level, with a .919 OPS over 562 plate appearances?

I'd definitely check in to see if you could grab him for a good deal, like a lower level pitching prospect and someone the Orioles like in AA or AAA that isn't on the top 100. They might still not want to do it, in which case... enjoy letting one of your top prospects rot in the minors!

It wouldn't exactly be the craziest thing in the world for a former top prospect to figure it out at the age of 25.

I get it. Odds are he doesn't amount to much, but to declare that it's impossible for him to improve is just wild.

Man I really hope Vargas has a good year this year. I truly think it would make a few people here so mad.

I don't know why these meme has taken off, but it is absurd.  No one is going to be mad if a Sox player has a good year.  Surprised, sure.  Mad?  That's just dumb.
