Expand Half the teams in the MLB are usually competing for something. The Sox are in the other half. There is no reason they can’t easily keep Smith on the roster. Losses will be in abundance already and the Sox have shown they have no problem playing a man short to save a few bucks. They will do the same to retain a decent pitching talent.
