Good chance Mason is shut down for a few months at a minimum even if they don't recommend TJS. Thus the probability of him getting any big league time just dropped to essentially zero.

Get the surgery now. Mason isn't young, and wasting another year hoping for a good outcome could end his chances.

Joey Batz just became Joey Ballz. This is the baseball sojourn we didn't ask for; but desperately needed.

Also, wondering about the 'flexor strain' vs a torn UCL. Both of these things relate to the elbow, right, but I'm not even totally sure what the difference is between a tendon and a ligament. The UCL injuries seem more damaging than flexor ones, I can recall Skubal missing extended time in 22-23 for a 'flexor strain', but people seemed to think 'thank goodness it isn't his UCL' (which he previously had surgically repaired/replaced). I guess I'm wondering: is this just a prelude to TJS or is it unrelated? Do we just assume every pitcher will get Tommy John surgery and...might as well just give 'em a new elbow while he's already missing time with a less intense elbow injury?

From DVS story this afternoon:

Right-hander Mason Adams, projected to debut at some point this season but sidelined with a flexor strain in his right elbow, “is hoping for the best, praying for the best” in his recovery.

“It’s tough but it is what it is,” Adams said two days after taking himself out of his start against the Reds. “Sets me up to deal with it. Rehab, and hopefully come back stronger and keep doing what I was doing.”

Adams said another doctor will check the elbow before a timetable for his return is determined.

Ligaments are static structures designed to support joints by holding to bones together. They stretch a little when joints move. Tendons connect muscles to bones. They contract and expand while helping to move one bone to another.

In this case the ulnar collateral ligament holds the humerus and ulna together and keeps the elbow stable during the throwing motion.

The flexor tendon refers to the wrist flexor muscles. While their primary function is to bend the wrist. However they originate near the elbow and cross the joint right over the UCL. The tendon acts as a secondary support to the elbow joint.

The issue is that a pitcher can strain the wrist flexor muscles while flexing the wrist while throwing. This joint structures maintains its stability in this case.

However the muscle can also be strained if the UCL becomes stretched and the muscles becomes the primary stabilizer of the joint.

Thus a strain of the flexor can have 2 causes the primary strain is fairly easy to rehab. The secondary strain isn't the big issue. It's getting the ligament to heal.
