SuperSteve
That's pretty cool that they are putting stuff together. Anyways; OSU sucks, Clarett swallows. Ya guys all know my love for the U of M.
Spiff
Harvard-Yale or Army-Navy = greatest rivalry ever. It is a toss-up between the two.
YASNY
As a kid, I wasn't much of a college football fan and living in the Chicago area at the time, I really had no allegience, nor reason to have any, for either team. Still, there is something about this game that has glued me to the TV every year since I was 8 or 9 years old.
Capn12
That could be...however I know that one of, if not the bitterest rivalries in the South is USC-Clemson. The 101st meeting of the 2 will happen this Saturday. This week is when you don't talk to your normal Clemson pals until Sunday. Its serious business down here. Alabama-Auburn the same way, although being a SC resident, I still vote for my Palmetto State Battle.
1549
Harvard-Yale or Army-Navy = greatest rivalry ever. It is a toss-up between the two. It depends on how you define a rivalry. An ESPN poll declared UM-OSU the greatest ever, but I don't think that is what makes it the best rivalry. I think classic battle lines, great moments, and of course importance make up a great rivalry. UM-OSU, has Bo vs. Woody as one classic battle line, Howard's pose on the punt return, as one of the many great moments, and every year the game means something in the big ten standings and often the national standings. Though Harvard-Yale, and Army-Navy, used to mean something, and still is a fun rivalry, it is not on the superscale of rivalries anymore. In the harvard-yale case, it is just a fun annual tradition, and in the army-navy case, you have to be a part of it to consider it the best around, otherwise it is only just another fun annual tradition. 1549
If you think those rivalries are "fun traditions", then you don't know s*** about them. True, and not true. I will confess that I don't know a whole lot about the yale vs. harvard game except that it gets a nice draw but still doesn't fill the yale bowl. the army vs. navy game is much more intense. While visiting West Point, I saw tons of 'beat navy' stuff, in fact almost every football fan there was expressing a hatred toward navy. But let me put the rivalries in there place. I live in NJ, about 15-20 miles outside of NYC. On the New York sports shows, and the new york papers, I have heard nothing about the army vs. navy game or the harvard vs. yale game. Both of those rivalries have ties to the tri-state area (army, and yale). Michigan and Ohio st. on the other hand is getting a relatively large amount of publicity, and that is a mid-west rivalry. It shows how national importance is what makes a rivalry a rivalry.
cwsox
1549, Spiff is going to knock it because it involves Michigan. Pay him no mind. There are some good rivalries out there - Army Navy with the cadets marching in, Texas Texas A&M, Wabash DePauw, Harvard Yale (which is a rivalry only to the elite when they put the martinius down long enough), USC UCLA, FSU Florida - but Michigan and Ohio State - look at the passion when Michigan plays ND or MSU and you know that is small percentage of what happens this week - if 100 years doesn't convince, if the century long storied history of the two schools doesn't convince, if the 113,000 in attendance don't convince, and Hail Yes we could sell more... than nothing will because some people just want to put down what they don't understand or want to appreciate because of other biases. You don't have to like either school to recognise the ESPN thing is correct - the best rivalry, anywhere. The OSU band comes in and does the Script Ohio and the Michigan fans will cheer that - and then the opening beats of the Michigan cadance as the Michigan band bursts onto the field - the passion that just erupts as the Go Blue M Club Supports You banner goes up - and it was long, long before Woody and Bo that there was this rivalry - been the last game of the season since the 30s and that was done then because the rivalry was already so intense God made the sky Blue to shelter us and the sun Maize to warm us - here's to the colors that float through the night - are you going? You saw the meeting place at the other site - I somehow doubt I will make that, I have to get the kid up and in the car by 7 I think for the drive so we can park and this year maybe actually buy a program before they run out and we are in row 9 in Section 30, just next to the students, so we'll be standing all game - I think I want to get down there early and not worry about meeting anyone. Spiff
OSU-Michigan is ONE OF the best rivalries. You call it the greatest ever and you accuse me of being biased. If I was biased I'd say FSU-Florida. Just because OSU and Michigan are highly ranked this year doesn't mean it's more intense than any other rivalry. I dunno...FSU Notre Dame is quite the rivalry For some of the better rivalries, I'd definately say FSU-Florida and to a lesser extent when Miami and FSU play. Michigan OSU is also really good and when UCLA and USC are both good, its a great rivalry and the games are typically close anyway. Bama and Tenessee is a pretty big historical rivalry as well. I'm probably leaving a lot of other rivalries out as well. Like Nebraska and OU.
The Bones
Best Rivalry? Here's a link to a contest espn is having to see what the fans vote the best rivalry. It is Ohio State vs. Michigan IMO.
Spiff
They don't even have FSU-Florida in that contest so it is automatically void.
The Bones
They don't even have FSU-Florida in that contest so it is automatically void. If you read the rules it says they only put one rivalry into the contest for each team. Florida-Georgia and Florida St.-Miami represent the 2 rivalries for those schools. I am in Section 37 row 13, and usually me and my dad go in as soon as the gates open. If we see eachother cool, if not, there is always next year.
