One of the Sox favorite past times is starting guys they're going to designate a few days later.

It’s so true and very bizarre.  Jankowski is going to be released within a week or so and has already started 50% of our games when we have at least five other dudes who can play the OF (maybe six with Maton?).  Just very hard to fathom why any competent manger would do this?  Jankowski should be used nothing more than a pinch runner and defensive replacement until Tauchman is back.

He was literally the latest acquisition and the last man on the roster.  Very strange indeed.

Jankowski must be a great clubhouse guy.  He's played in parts of 10 MLB seasons and never been a league average bat while not being a great defender.

30. Chicago White Sox

The White Sox have the worst lineup in the American League, and it’s only going to get worse when they trade their best hitter, center fielder Luis Robert Jr., between now and the trade deadline. Chicago is hoping that first baseman Andrew Vaughn is better than last year (.246 average, 19 homers) and that Andrew Benintendi can repeat or top his 20-homer season of a year ago. But the rest of the lineup is basically filled with role players who are serving as placeholders until the farm system can produce better major leaguers.

Unfortunately, managers also play favorites with their guys, even when the entire rest of the world knows that their favorites should be “last man on the bench” type players rather than starting games…

“Will was my bench coach for two years, an awesome guy, and the transparency he just kinda let me know what they thought coming,” Jankowski said of Venable, who took over the White Sox skipper duties last October. “Meeting the guys early in camp, it seems like a great group of guys, so I think it’s a good fit.”

Venable, a former player, was the Rangers’ associate manager alongside Bruce Bochy when Jankowski played for Texas in 2023, the year the Rangers won it all.

I thought he was a plus defender

Agreed.  Do we think Teel could be moving to 1B when Quero is called up?  Who is better defensively at catcher — Teel or Quero?

Expand

Quero is only 5'9". Think it would be better to split them over catcher and DH

He's a very good defender. Problem is the Sox aren't short on outfield defense so his purpose doesn't make any sense for this roster.

I still think it would be weird if Thaiss stayed around instead of Lee, because Lee bats righty. Maybe they don't like how he handles a pitching staff or something, but I'd rather see him DHing and Benintendi in the outfield, then.

There was something Harold said about him forgetting game plans in a future  Future Sox thread yesterday but that's unsubstantiated. I countered with it didn't seem to hurt Burke went he started game one and a lot of times how you pitch depends on situations. A lot of it is knowing hitters which is what the game plan is for but you use you gut a lot too with the game plan in mind .

Yes, every team would be younger if you eliminate there older players from the calc.

Why aren't the Sox at least #3-5?

Robert is the only veteran player with any trade value...and he's actually still younger than the average rostered player.

We need to be near the youngest by the end of this season IMO.

Dealing/waiving Martin Perez will be one aspect of that.

Almost all the vets will be gone by the trade deadline.  The bigger issue right now is not having any attractive options to throw out in the OF.
