southsider2k5
Wow, pro sports have just gone crazy, Lebron James had over $100 million in endorsements before he ever set foot on an NBA court, and now a 14 year old is the highest played player in the MLS. whitesoxfan99
The reason he is getting so much money is because he has the potential to actually make a name for soccer in this country.
ChiSox_Sonix
if anyone has seen this kid, you will understand why he was offered this deal. And anyone who follows/cares about soccer, with Adu, Donovan, Beasley and a couple others, the United States will actually have a semi-legitimate shot to make a run at the 2006 World Cup for the first time ever

Donovan has said he doesn't want to go back to Europe because he was there a few years ago and never played. He was on Bayer Leverkusen in Germany and he has turned down offers from the team to come back. Beasley has said he would like to go to Europe though and it's probably only a matter of time until he goes over there unless MLS becomes much better and/or popular with Adu coming. Adu will definitely go to Europe. He turned down more money from European teams to stay here so I'm sure he just wants to stay home for a few years until he is ready to leave. southsider2k5
I really don't follow soccer, but it just blows my mind that a 14 year old is the highest paid soccer player in the USA.
DBAHO
I thought I heard a few months ago that he signed a contract with Manchester United, but yeah he'll definitely help out the MLS in a big way. THey need to keep him long term to prove to players in Europe that the MLS is indeed one of the betta leagues in the world, but they've got a long way to go bf they even become close to the English Premier League, Italy's Seria A and Spain's La Primera Liga. ChiSox_Sonix
no i think he may have signed with Man U's junior team but i dont think he signed with the Premier club. This is great news for the MLS though. Adu's prescence may also persuade Donovan and Beasly to stick around a few more years, becuase their moves to Europe are inevitable. SuperSteve
MLS is like minor league baseball. Many of the best Americans already play in Europe, and there is not a single big named foreigner in the MLS.

SuperSteve
well there are some known foreigners, but you're right, there are no "star" foreigners Who do you consider a known foreigner? I think the most highly touted player, American or foreign, would be McBride.

And there are several good american players too, with McBride, Mathis, Preki, Donovan, Beasley, Wolf

And there are several good american players too, with McBride, Mathis, Preki, Donovan, Beasley, Wolf Valderamma is super old, he is retired from international play too. Moreno isn't any good anymore with all the injuries he has. Marco is old too. The MLS needs some superstars, but that is doubtful to happen. I do agree that there are a few known players; Valderamma being most notable. The Americans here are just waiting to go overseas. Look at Reyna, O'Brien, Howard, Friedel, Keller, Kirvorksi (sp?), Lewis, and Sanneh. I hope the MLS becomes great, but it would take so much time. ChiSox_Sonix
the MLS will never become great in my opinion. Just look at the English, Spanish and Italian Premiere Leagues. Not to mention the Dutch, German and French, among others. But i mean look at Real Madrid. That team could beat an MLS All-Star team, with Beckham, Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Raul, Zidane, Roberto Carlos, and Casillas in goal. And thats just one team, albeit probably the most talented team in Europe. Plus, soccer is sooooo important and loved over there. I'd love for the MLS to become great, but its not like it would just take a very long time, i just dont see it ever happening

With good runs in the World Cup and Olympics and just peoples general fascination with him I think he could make soccer much bigger in this country. Alot needs to go right though. Chisoxfn
The US did pretty damn good this last time around. IT was a great game with Germany that could of really went either way. I didn't miss any of the world cup games, it was pretty fun getting up at like 3 am and watching the game and then going to get some breakfast at Denny's or something. Donovan is the man though...but it will be cool to see how Freddy Adu does. US is getting a lot better at soccer and it would be sweet to see them win the World Cup. We would no longer be the laughing stock of soccer
SuperSteve
The best Americans are Howard and O'Brien right now and for sometime. Adu would be at Internazionale had it not been for his mother sometime ago, he was offer hundreds of thousands when he was about eleven. Real Madrid are the Yankees of the soccer world, and I know ya know that Sonix.
ChiSox_Sonix
well i seriously believe we will contend in 2006. Adu, Donovan, Beasley, Wolff, O'Brien, Regis, Sanneh, Mathis, Howard, McBride, we'll have a good team, probably better than the 2002 squad. It'll be interesting to see how they do in the Olympics, although i believe its for players under the age of 23 or something like that, but Beasley, Donovan, Adu, Convey and a few others will be eligible. BrandoFan
It's too early to tell how good Adu is going to be. Is he going to have poise and vision to be world caliber forward? He's already got first-step quickness and balance you can't teach, but as far as all that other stuff? Next 2-3 years will tell. I certainly have seen too many phenoms fail miserably. I mean they have bought 5 of probably the top 10 players in the world in Ronaldo, Beckham, Luis Figo, Zidane and Roberto Carlos. And Raul and Casillas are no slouches either. Short of David Seaman and Oliver Kahn, not many keepers are better than Casillas. And Phillipe Cocu is quite the player to have coming off of your bench. SuperSteve
Olympics is 23 and younger, with three players of any age. A team can have a 1900000 year old if they'd like. Adu didn't make the U-21's, he is no where near the full team yet. Santino Quranta and Ed Johnson are better players right now then Adu. As is Magee (a local boy). ChiSox_Sonix
Do you think Adu will be on the Olympic team next summer though? i think he may. a 15 year old at the Olympics is not unheard of. Teams like Nigeria, Senegal, Brazil even have 16-17 year olds playing in Olympics sometimes. I think Adu will be on the team if he can hold his own in the MLS. He wont be the star of the team, but i wouldnt be surprised if he was on the team

I see him doing what Beasley did in 2002 to a lesser extent. Maybe come in late to use his speed to generate scoring opportunities.
