Flash is history

I think two reasons not to sign him to 1) a two year deal 2) to give him 5 million. Yes, he did well last year, but how long can he sustain the success. I could remember at the begining of the season when I was reading updates of games on SOXTALK  , and people would b**** and complain that Flash is in. Then all of a sudden his fortunes changed around the all star braek. He won't be missed

Do you guys have to keep writing the same tired old "JR is cheap" posts every day?

IF people didn't complain and say the same things over again they couldn't get their post count up.

I'm with ya, I think Koch is on a VERY short leash. Marte has proven he can close games, and if one of these young lefties shows something in spring, I'd be happy if they stuck Marte in there to close games, assuming Koch struggles.

I really had a hard time with Koch last year, what a disaster. That being said, I'm rooting for him. It's obvious he's got some talent. If his arm is healthy (big IF) and they can figure out a way to have him throw first pitch strike (what a concept) he will be a big asset.

Unfortunately, I'm not holding my breath that it'll work out that way.

i'm all for Damaso as closer.

but we're still going to need William and others to help out.

Damaso has the s*** to be a closer but I just believe he should stay as setup. To me, and many can argue either way, a certain mentality goes into closing games. Give it to the guy who has proven success (Koch)

Although Im not throwing out the idea I agree with what the article says: that is to have Koch close and keep Marte as a reserve incase Botch shows up.

I'll tell you this, I'd rather waste just the millions of dollars on koch, than waste the millions of dollars on koch AND have him go out there, try to pitch, and lose us ballgames, but hey, thats just me...

TQ, you're lurking, jump in.

Did you get an invoice for 2004 yet?  I didn't.

I'm going down there on Sat. morning to get a seat, the damn things should be just like new, no one ever sat in them anyways!

On Gordon, I'm not sure he's arbitration eligible, but could be wrong.  He's being heavily recruited by Pinella and he lives in the Tampa area.  Buh bye.

Hey Jim, Saw me lurking! I would like to go on sat as well. Want to go together? Let me know. I did not get my invoice yet and I paid for playoffs and took the option to apply for this year. I am actually glad, I want the sox to do something (get players make a trade) before they raise prices!

Here are my views in a nutshell

1) gordon wants too much money. Let him go. He will get injured.

2) colon should not have turned down the sox. Probably will end up getting what we offered him.

3)Sign Sullivan.

4) The sox are raising there payroll to 60 million. trouble is Konerko, LEE, Thomas, ordonez, schonwiess, beurhle, garland and valentin, all get raises. So effectively its the same team with a higher payroll. We didn't win, so time to make some moves. personally I would like to keep lee and mags and build around them, with Crede, miles, gload, rowand, Reed, borchard, sweeney, anderson, olivo. Then pay for pitching.

Anyway, nice to see you on line. I look to see if your around. Talking to Julie Swieca alot via email. She has some tidbits.

Any player can be offered arbitration by their previous team as long as its before december 7 or as long as they are not signed by another team before they are offered it.

And im not sure KW will take the chance on offering Flash Arbitration, it seems like KW is too stubborn to put any kind of other offer on the table.

I hope KW offers both these guys arbitration, because the sox desperately need more decent prospects in their Minor League System. :usa

I agree, they should offer arbitration. Colon won't get more than 12 million and I can't see gordon getting more than four. If they do accept arbitration, we are stuck with them for one year. Which is fine, but then we would definatly need to get rid of koch and or konerko, which I think KW is finding NOBODY wants. Maybe that is why he won't risk arbitration.

Not only could they accept it, but if they do, the sox could always trade them half-way through the season if they arent in contention.

My hopeful guess is that KW is making a big deal out of "stopping all negotiations" to try and make it seem like he hasn't/wont offer arbitration, in hopes that a team will sign them before they find out they were offered arbitration.

Hopefully the sox offer both arbitration and both turn it down...im 99% possitive that colon wouldnt accept arbitration...and im better than 90% sure that Gordon will get a better offer than arbitration and wont accept it. :usa

Word on his age.

Word on his injuries.

Word on his good-but-not-great season in which he blew every other save.

At 2.5 Mill/1 year deal I could take a chance. 2 year/10 Mill? No thanks.

I seem to remember one Gordon moment: Metrodome, tie ballgame, bases loaded, bottom of the 9th, 2 outs, 3-2 breaking pitch to AJ Pirzinki that the latter missed by almost a foot even though it was pretty much down the middle. Very instense moment.

No s***: if we somehow knew what we would get with Koch and Rock White, they would've sat and Sox would have been in the friggin' POST-SEASON.

It's called "addition by sittheirassdown"

I agree. Neither would accept the arbitration offer, as they are both looking for multi-year contracts. If they did for some unknown reason accept the offer, especially Gordon, I'd just call the Yanks or D-Rays and see what I could get for him.

The D-Rays think they will have him signed. In the race for Carl Everett, too. Imagine th indignity of losing two FAs to the Rays. :drink

In a flash, the Devil Rays might have the closer they need.

Even though rookie Lance Carter saved 26 games last season, and has what the Rays believe is a bright future as a closer, Tampa Bay is making a hard pitch to sign Avon Park native Tom "Flash" Gordon.

And the feeling, at least among Rays manager Lou Piniella and GM Chuck LaMar, is Gordon could be in the fold by the time you carve your turkey this week.

Gordon has had one monster season as a closer. That was in 1998 when he converted 46-of-47 save opportunities for the Red Sox. He saved 27 games in 2001 for the Cubs, but started to have health issues after that.

Last season, though, Gordon rebounded with an impressive year: 7- 6, 12 saves, 3.16 ERA in 66 games with the White Sox.

Several teams, including the suddenly cash-happy Phillies and the open-wallet Yankees, are interested in Gordon, but the Rays can offer something no other team can: a chance to be the closer. And, for Gordon, that might be worth more than the extra money the Phillies and Yankees are offering. If he went to Philadelphia or the Yankees, he would have to settle for being the setup man.

Something else might give the Rays the edge. The Phils and Yanks are offering Gordon one-year deals, but the Rays are willing to give Gordon the two-year deal he wants.

"I had a nice meeting with him (last week) and he seemed very interested," Piniella said. "Hopefully, it can work out."
