The White Sox are reportedly zooming back in on Colon, and Omar Minaya is trying not to trade Vazquez. The White Sox have been looking for a shortstop so they can move Jose Valentin to second. Supposedly the Sox even offered a 3 year extention that would have deferred some of his '04 money, and kept him "affordable", but Maggs turned it down. The Sox agree to a contract with Maggs, put it in writing, and because JR is too cheap to honor the deal, the Sox wanna re-work it to $15 million in deferments. I'd have told them to, "go pound" too. Right now they are spending a lot on offense and I think the adjustment is going to come when they spend more of it on pitching. The thing is, its gonna be hard doing all those things. If Colon signs with us, then things get a hell of a lot easier, cause you got yourself your rotation and the only concern there is the pen (bringing Sully or whomever in) as well as your 5th. Then KW can concentrate on sliding payroll and bringing in other guys he wants and then if this stuff is done in time, you could see him land a player or two via fa. A player with one season left re-works his contract--basically an extension--with the last year rolled in with the new years. In declining salary markets, you'll be seeing more and more of this and of salary deferrments, as teams have to "eat" portions of old contracts that are still at the past's "higher" market price. Why would you view this as the Sox screwing Maggs? This is the Sox trying to keep Maggs. Apparently, his agent isn't convinced that salaries are going lower and that Maggs ain't going to get $15 mill a year over XX years. I think he'll get the message eventually, but by then, it's hard to tell if Maggs will still be in a Sox uni or if we'll have moved on to add a different impact player with his salary "slot." Forkit! Which is the only way to do it, imo, because he isn't a 14 mill a year player. SO they offer him an extension which would be equivalent to say 11 or 12 mill a year (Just an example) then maybe to Maggs and their agent, that is 2 or 3 mill deferred right there. I see it in the NFL all of the time, but I can't think of anyone in MLB who has renegotiated a contract. Anyone got any examples or links? Gotta love baseball, it used to be the players sitting out trying to renegotiate a deal they didn't want to honor now the owners are trying to get out of deals too only they don't have the option of sitting out.
