Gammons on Colon/Sox

Reading Gammons new Diamon Notes he says the White Sox are "zooming" back in on Colon. This maybe becasue the Yankee's deal is reportadly 3 years at 38 million, not a lot off of the Sox deal (however, I'm not sure how much of the Sox was defferred money).

With this point it is interesting to ask just what the hell the Sox are doing this offseason. It's an topic Dan and Terry have brought up on the Score a few times.

Basically my question is if they were offering Colon as much money as reported, what would they have done if they signed him? During their current situation without him they are crying money trouble (even though attendence has been up the last 3 years). With him it just adds even more payroll with no guarantee they can dump Mags, Konerko, Koch, etc... salary. Now the key word there is can, not willing to.

If anyone has heard anything about this or have any ideas let me hear them

P.S. Gammons also said Sox maybe looking to move Valentine to 2nd

First off, welcome aboard.

I've kind of felt all along that Colon's price tag would stay near what the Sox offered him. I had faith that the Sox would sign Colon and most of that left after negotiations stopped. The market is rather soft though. I think the Angels are the one team that could sneak in and grab Colon. Him playing in Anaheim could be a way for Moreno (A latin american owner) to find a way to market the Angels to more latin fans, adding a new fan base to all the new fans that came out last year after they won the season.

If the Sox bring Colon back, then I think they have a rotation, as long as they work on the bullpen that can take them deep. Guillen's offensive difference as a manager or what I think will be a difference will lead to a lot more "created" runs, although we'll probably run ourselves out of some rallies too. But that creating style will be very effective with good pitching.

For some reason, recent reports show the Sox willing to spend some dough. They are seeing prices drop for some players and they now know if they cna unload one or two guys to fill some areas of need, then they COULD get Colon back and have Tejada or Matsui as our new shortstop with Jose at 2nd or Jose moved elsewhere and someone else at 2nd.

Its going to be really interesting though.

What are they doing?

I think they are playing an interesting game of poker. It will be interesting to see if the hand plays out at all like what they are hoping for...

I think they still want Colon back and I think they want to land at least one other impact player--CF and or SS...

As prices fall and other teams slash payroll, the Sox may be able to add these players and not add too much payroll. Who knows? Maybe JR will let the payroll ante climb a bit higher IF the right free agents see their value drop to within the Sox salary range?

It will be interesting to see. I'm not going to b**** and moan until I see how they play their hand out. So far, nothing has happened.

If the Sox are able to bring Colon and Tejada in then I would think they would look to move Carlos, Magglio and Konerko or at least two of them, one of the deals for a left handed bat, and pretty much all for salary relief. Then you'd seen an outfield probably containing Reed, one guy who stays (Konerko will definately be moved, question is how much of this years salary do the Sox pick up).

I think if they can reach and agreement with Magglio he will stick around. Who knows, JR may up the payroll to 65 mill or maybe 70. I don't see it happening, but if he is told that upping payroll by 5 mill (Just this year) and that it gives him an amazing chance because of all the bargains out there, he may just do it. I mean ya never know.

I'd think he feels that like this past year's playoffs, the declining salary market puts the Sox again in the position where if you can just get to playoffs, yoiu have a chance if you get hot.

It will take a year or so more for all the MLB teams to catch on to the reality of lower salary structures [not to mention the players]. That uncertainty often means no clear favorite will exist until things settle out. That's what chaos or change breeds...uncertainty. Perfect time to up the ante--or at least hold your hand a little longer than you normally would.
