Griffey and Sean Casey for Magglio, Konerko, and Billy Koch Does Cincy have the cash for that? By my quick crude figures, they would have to add at least $10 mil in payroll for '04. Plus Ken Griffey would have to approve it.
Chisoxfn
I should add that I have no idea how valid this is and I don't think anything is immenent. I also think Chitown sports talk would pick up this type of story and run it, but who knows. It does make some sense. Sox save 6.5 mill but take on a 12.5 mill contract till 2008. On the plus side both Casey and Griffey bring left handed pop to the table and both are solid defensive players. Griff could also DH in the AL and if you get one big time season out of him, then his trade value goes through the roof (Basically if he stays healthy a full year). Mix that with the fact that he's affordable and he truly has star power. If he finds his health (most of his injuries have been flukes; I'd have to be a doctor to know, but I'm assuming they are things that he can be fully recovered from and aren't supposed to be a lingering type thing, like Pk's hip). If this would happen I'd like to see the Reds pick up some more salary. But I could see this deal as a semi possibility.

Then again Cinncy may then try and move our contracts somewhere else under the belief that it will be easier trading them. It definately be interesting though. You could see that as a type of deal that could really make one team better. I mean if Maggs, Konerko and Koch stick around and return to form, it looks great for the Reds. If Griffey stays healthy and Casey plays like he usually does then its a great deal for the Sox. Sox clear I think 6 mill (10 if Casey makes the same as he did last year) in salaries with the trade. Remember last year when Griffey and Maggs was offered and KW laughed at it. Also another option for the Sox (IMO) would be to then see if Griffey has some value and if someone else is willing to take a flier on him. If they move those three and get Casey and then move Griffey for a decent to good pitcher, then they have cleared 28 mill in payroll which is plenty to sign Colon and Tejada and then add some others via FA. Griffey would fill two of our biggest needs in a CF and LH power hitter. Plus that deal would open up a ton of cash to resign our guys or go after another starter. bjmarte
With the contract he's got Griffey is going to turn into the hot potato of MLB. Hold on to him just long enough then ditch him right before he proves himself to be worthless, sticking some other team with the rest of his crappy contract. Some might argue he is there already. Flash Tizzle
WSI is notorious for false rumors. Go back to the thread where some guy said there was going to be a "blockbuster trade to make our team better in the next few days". that was about a week ago...... But if this deal falls through I'll eat the proverbial crow. As you guys have pointed out it does fill some holes (mainly 1B/CF, left handed power) and leave us with some extra money; so it does make sense. (Of course I wouldn't care if he would come back to form) and no way Griffey could DH cause Frank is here ans casey would be at 1st.

As far as Griffey, he always seemed like a guy that just wanted to play the game and have fun. I just can't see him being a cancer. I think the media makes him out to be that because he made such a big deal about coming home and then he's sucked.

But remember what Pokey Resse, Dimitri Young and a couple other Reds players said about Griff. But Hey if we would be back to form... Hell with it, he's a hell of a player. Still tho the sox are concentrating on big bats and not looking for balance and speed. Still we have no leadoff hitter

I think Griff was definately under some pressure so I wouldn't be shocked if he said somethings that he wouldn't of usual said. I am a Griff fan though. I'd still prefer dealing Griff somewhere else if at all possible cause I'd rather just see the Sox use all that money on signings.

Welcome aboard I'm with you on the rumor, but if the two sides offered this, I think they would both be interested. I think if this was being reported all over the airwaves in Cinncy, then someone would be saying it on Chicago Sports radio.

Chisoxfn
Damn next thing you will tell me is that Sam Smith trade rumors aren't true... LMAO...Sam Smith's deals are the best. I swear I could write his column. I'd just have to go to bulls4ever.com look at one of the many proposed trades that happen there on a daily basis...grab one of them and bam I got my story of the week. Dick Allen
I don't want Griffey in a White Sox uniform. Not now, not ever. I wouldn't have minded having him during his Seattle days, but just like his father, he will spend the majority of his middle to late 30's on the disabled list. SnB
I didn't read this whole topic but let me say. I think this would be a great deal. Griffey will come back, he can't be THAT good one year and then have a curse put on him just like that. I think he still has some good years in front of him and well Casey is a stud. elrockinMT
I checked with a source in Cincinnati who covers Reds baseball and was told that that he hadn't headr the rumor around Cincy and didn't believe the Sox would want to take on Griffey and Casey's contracts.
