1549
Any guesses about what the future looks like after valentin? The orginization looks pretty weak at shortstop, I think it would be wise to acquire somebody like Felipe Lopez, who isn't very good, but still has potential, and could hold the position down another year to give time for somebody to develop. SuperSteve
Lopez isn't as bad as people make him out to be. I would love someone like Ramon Vasquez of the Padres.
Gene Honda Civic
THREADJACK WARNING!!! Does anyone remember around 1995 there was a HS Basketball player who SI had tabbed as "the next Micheal Jordan" His name was Filipe Lopez. I think he may have played at St. John's What ever happened to that guy? The Cover of SI to Nowhere. I bet he's either playing in Europe or in Jail. I would love someone like Ramon Vasquez of the Padres. yeah, Vazquez would be a great addition, I think I saw that Baltimore did not pick up Cruz's option. He wouldn't be a bad guy to have on the team. You are right about Lopez, he has power potential, but he has not shown it at all in the majors. In fact he has been down right aweful. He knows how to get on base though, his OB% dwarfed his batting average, but neither were close to stellar.

Yes, I do remember him, and yes he did go to St. Johns. He was aweful at St. Johns, and he fell off the face of the earth. I haven't heard anything since, but I don't remember him being a thug type. Probably playing with Leon Smith, and Ronnie Fields in the 'never was' league.

winninguglyin83
Felipe Lopez last played with the Timberwolves. They granted him his free agency last summer. No word on where he is now. Felipe Lopez the baseball player had a terrible year with Cincy -- offensively and defensively. team started slow and so did he. They got down on him and stayed down on him. He's only 23. I'll throw out another name -- Pokey Reese. He was originally a SS with the Reds. Excellent defensively. Below average offensively. But I believe he is a free agent and I can't believe he'd be very expensive.

I see Willie as similar to him. Pokey was hurt alot this year, went downhill since leaving Cincy. Cheap, and I'm sold; otherwise no.
greasywheels121
I know this isn't the same Cruz, but I remember seeing earlier this offseason that San Fran wasn't going to pick up Jose Cruz's option. Do you think we'd look at him THIS offseason?
winninguglyin83
I agree cheap only, too. Can't believe the Pirates will keep him. He made 5 or 6 million last year. He'll be lucky to get half that.

winninguglyin83
No to Jose Cruz Jr. Seattle, Toronto and now SF have all been in a rush to wave him bye-bye. That tells me there is more to the story. Rather see the Sox play their own young guys.

Tons of talent Tons of attitude Tons of lazy
Chisoxfn
Pokey Reese is a better version of Royce the Choice, imo, but he does have some tools and it definately be worth a look. As far as depth, the Sox have nothing next year so they will need to get someone. Maybe Valido, Perez, Gonzalez come through but they all have a lot of minor league play ahead of them for the time being.
SuperSteve
I think DBAH0 meant Dievi (sp?) Cruz, SS for the Balt O's. He could be cheap, expierenced, and able to play 2B. I am still a huge Jose Cruz Jr. fan, I'd love him in our OF.

Well, considering Freddy Sanchez was the guy behind Nomar before Sanchez got traded in the Suppan deal.

I would like to know why would he be in Jail?

ESPN Reported a few weeks back that Pittsburgh won't pickup Pokey's option. I would take a look at him, If he came cheap. As for Felipe Lopez I would look at him too. He's only 23 and he signed for a Biggggg Chunk of Cash. I think he would be a good Gamble. Say no to Deivi he has limited range
Chisoxfn
Ramirez is the reason the Red Sox were comfortable moving Freddy Sanchez, but he'll likely slide over and play 3rd. Odds are the BoSox will have Nomar or Arod filling up short for a long long time. But the Red Sox aren't too willing to give up prospects unless we give up some legit players in return. I don't think they are gonna want Konerko, Maggs or Lee.

Josh, I think the inference was that he had fallen off the face of the earth and no one knew where he was. Not being a huge NBA fan, I didn't know he played for the T-Wolves and hadn't heard his name since he was at St. John's.

You are probably right about him not sucking at St. Johns, but I don't remember him even starting there, but I am no expert. I think whoever made the comment about Lopez being in jail was simpling using a bit of social commentery based on the number of standout basketball players that don't make it and end up in trouble with the law *cough* Leon Smith *cough*
