Team Report

C Sandy Alomar wasn't the team's highest offseason priority, but it was important to re-sign him. After an intense offseason program a year ago, Alomar showed he still has pop in his bat to complement a game-calling ability that is among the best in the majors. He is more than willing to resume his role of starting two or three times a week and to serve as a tutor for Miguel Olivo.

BEST HANDS

3B Joe Crede's offense was up and down last year, but his defense was steady from start to finish. His quick hands allow him to adeptly handle short hops moving to his left and make backhand stops behind the bag. Crede also works extensively in the batting cage to improve his quickness at the plate.

C Sandy Alomar has been re-signed to a one-year, $750,000 deal

TWINS

The Twins are shopping OF Jacque Jones (the Padres may be interested) so that they might free up the money to re-sign Shannon Stewart ... RHP LaTroy Hawkins will likely sign with the A's, Red Sox, Yankees or Cubs ... The Angels have interest in LHP Eddie Guardado.

YANKEES

Discussions are back on with the Expos regarding a Nick Johnson (and others)-for-Javier Vazquez trade

RED SOX

The Sox may have interest in CF Mike Cameron, but only if they can first trade Johnny Damon ... Closer Keith Foulke will likely sign with Boston or Oakland ... RHP Scott Williamson says he'd like to be given a shot at the rotation next season, but that's not likely to happen

ORIOLES

With Derrek Lee and Richie Sexson no longer available, the O's must look elsewhere to find a first baseman. There may be some interest in Robert Fick ...

PADRES

To fill their hole in center field, the Padres may be considering three options: signing Mike Cameron or Kenny Lofton or trading for Jacque Jones of the Twins. The team has talked to the Mets about a deal that would send RHP Kevin Jarvis and OF Terrence Long to New York for OF Roger Cedeno.
