I just don't get it...

Why would we sign Valentin to a ridiculous contract just to trade for a younger shortstop? I can't see Uribe being a utility guy, and if the Sox are serious about moving Jose to second I think I might vomit.

I've said it since the day they re-signed Jose, and I'll say it again. Jose is not worth 5 million dollars a year. I don't know what the hell Kenny was thinking signing him to a contract like that. Especially when there are guys out there that could help us. (Colon, Castillo, and Hawkins.)

I was hoping that this off-season would be different, however I again was wrong.

Great job Kenny, Juan Uribe. The upcoming season already looks bright and promising.

Look past the obvious.

Valentin is signed for only one year, there's nothing wrong with getting a guy with potential and have him be an understudy.

Besides, we don't know if Jose will be traded yet. That could still happen.

why would we sign jose to a new contract if they are planning to trade him.  Now it's going to be even harder to get him out of here with that bloated contract, we should have just let him walk.

Technically, we didn't resign him, we picked up his option.

And maybe to try to get some value for him. I don't think we can though. The only team I think would take him is LA.

Because if we didn't pick up his option and instead signed him we would of been stuck with him because we couldn't trade him right away.

A few other teams that could use Jose are the Pads (They are looking for more pop right now, especially with the loss of Kotsay and a Vazquez for Jose deal could be a possibility, although they may play Jose at 2nd temporarily until Jake Gatreu is ready. Plus they have whats his name (the ss prospect...Khalil Greene). Most likely they will want a one year type replacement to give them seasoning and Jose could be the guy. Angels could also use a little more pop and it seems as if they don't want Eckstein and will probably let Kennedy go.

Those who keep saying we could have had Castillo for 3 years at 5-6 million instead of Jose are flat out wrong.

Castillo got a much better offer from the Mets but he turned it down to stay with the Marlins

So it is fair to say we would have to pay 7-8 mill a year, and even then he could have turned us down.....then we would have no 2B and no SS, and no salary room to get anyone

Getting Valentin is not such a bad thing

This division is going to be very weak next year too, and is there for the taking if we can get one solid pitcher

I am willing to bet anything, that when the trade deadline draws near, Kenny will upgrade what he cannot do in the offseason, at very low salary increases. That is the trend these days in MLB....get cheap players at the trade deadline

With our division, if we get Colon or Ponson, we will lead the division by the trade deadline, provided we play with intensity from the start

The way i see it, is that we got uribe to replace graffinino. Since graffy wants more playing time he turned down a contract extension from the sox. Im guessing uribe will be a utility guy this year, and then next year he will replace valentin. Also, they said in the daily herald that robbie's agent is pushing for a 2 year contract and that its not likely going to happen. So im guessing theyre going to put willie at 2nd full time next year. That's just my guess though.

As of right now, what other plan can there be? :D

Valentin wasn't signed, his contract was picked up. Had the Sox of rejected his contract, he wouldn't have stayed and the Sox would have been in a situation with NO shortstop at all.

Valentin is useless in my opinion and is overpaid as you said, but by not signing him they have no other option, so they will be putting themselves in a situation where they will have to sign another SS for more money or go and give up a lot in a trade for one.

It basically came down to having Valentin at $5 mil, possibly getting someone like Tejada at $12 or signing Rey Sanchez at $1 million.

They took the safe way out, assuring that we have someone at shortstop. Ideally they wanted to resign Valentin to a smaller contract, but Valentin said that he took a paycut the first time and won't do it again. Only way he would do it is if the Sox brought back the same team and really put themselves in position to win (which they haven't thus far).

I want Valentin gone more than anyone, but the reality of it is that if we didn't sign him, we'd be in a situation where we'd have no SS, 2B, CF, SP, and two relievers and still guys like Konerko and Koch who they'd really like to trade.

Jose Valentin is as good a SS as was available and maybe better. Forget the names of Nomar and A-Rod because we will never be in that kind of financial picture especially with Reinsdorf in charge of the checkbook nor should we look at paying the inflated salaries they demand. Jose has performed well with the Sox and I am glad he is staying. I think Uribe is here to replace Graffy and be insurance. Willie Harris looks to be the 2B anchor next year. I am not sure that there are any Sox players that some posters here like at all. We seem to quick to criticize our own team roster and undervalue our players. You develop a team of 25 players each having a role to play in making a winner and as much as we would like to see it will never have a roster of 25 Barry Bonds type players.
