DBAHO
From MLB.com, Royals: ESPN's Peter Gammons reported Wednesday that the Royals are close to signing catcher Benito Santiago and outfielder Raul Mondesi. The Royals have targeted Santiago as their No. 1 catcher. He made $1.775 million last year while hitting .279 for the Giants. Mondesi is among a group of outfielders who have been targeted with Raul Ibanez getting away to Seattle through free agency. The Royals continue to work trying to sign some of their own free agents before Sunday. Reliever Jason Grimsley is one they would like to get under contract. Grimsley said his first preference is Kansas City, but as of Tuesday night the one-year offer wasn't what he would have wanted. Yankees: A day after reporting the club's interest in a deal for Brown, Newsday wrote: "With the Red Sox stockpiling their best starting rotation in ages, George Steinbrenner is determined -- as always -- to top his historic rivals. So determined, some baseball officials believe, that he might be willing to acquire not one, not two, but three elite pitchers. As in three of the quartet containing Andy Pettitte, Bartolo Colon, Javier Vazquez and Kevin Brown." Twins: On the day after losing Hawkins to the Cubs, the Twins are still talking to their three remaining key free agents -- Eddie Guardado, Shannon Stewart and Kenny Rogers. "There has been dialogue, but there hasn't been an offer," said Brian Peters, one of Stewart's agents. "The closer we get to the (Dec. 7 arbitration offer) deadline, the less likely it will be that Shannon will end up with the Twins. There is still certainly a possibility." Peters said Stewart is still getting "significant interest" from other clubs. Guardado's agent, Kevin Kohler, said more talks were planned with Minnesota on Wednesday. He believed the Twins might wait until the weekend to present their offer. "I would think (Hawkins' departure) would decide things for the Twins a little bit," Kohler said. "It should sharpen their focus a bit on who they'll go after in their bullpen concerns."
CSF
Gee, a Peter Gammons article mentioning his 2 favorite teams. What a surprise. The world ain't revolving unless there's news about the Yankees & Red Sox.
CWSOX45
Isn't this the same Peter Gammons that predicted Kansas City would land Juan Gonzalez at the trading deadline? Gammons is an expert on the Red Sox and Yankees. I know he has been reliable in the past, however I won't believe that until it actually happends. That being said, I think he may be sandbagging on one of them.... not much has been said of Greg Maddux. I could see him in pinstripes come april. The Braves don't want to be screwed with Maddux on arbitration again, they had to trade Millwood because of it.
greasywheels121
Eh the Royals can blow money on those two.....That won't affect much.
witesoxfan
Eh the Royals can blow money on those two.....That won't affect much. Raul Mondesi's arm is something to be worried about, I don't care how he hits. And Santiago is and always has been a solid catcher. I see no reason why he won't be a solid catcher once again. Solid signings....however, if you asked Joe Posnanski, they'd be bigger moves then the Red Sox getting Schilling.
Chisoxfn
These are way better moves then seeing the Sox lose Colon. It seems like the Royals are seriously trying. Santiago may be old, but he calls a great game, is still good defensively and has a lot more pop then our current catcher. He's not quite a hall of famer, but he's pretty damn close to it. And Mondesi is a solid player who will play good defense, hit some homers and just be solid.
winninguglyin83
I believe there was a report somewhere on ESPN.com today that said Maddux would be interested in returning to play for the Cubs. Maddux at their Number four starter? gulp
Chisoxfn
Maddux and Perez would be pretty nice for the Sox. You could probably get Maddux relatively cheap if you went after him now and then get Perez via trade. Build up the pen and I'd say thats a solid rotation. I still have a lot of faith in Maddux. He may not of been himself last year, but he stlil had a very good ERA and won like 16 games.
Chisoxfn
Why not the Sox. He's a big name, most likely can be had for about 10 mill less then he made last season and is still a front line pitcher when u need it (Such as the playoffs). Plus the Sox only have to invest one year to him and maye an option year.

greg775
Isn't Benito Santiago something like 70 years old? Looks to me like the Royals and Twins aren't interested in winning anymore. If Reinsdork would suck it up and raise payroll 20 mill, we might win the division every year from now on. Question: WOuld an extra 20 mill result in so many extra tickets and concessions and parking, and merchandise sales, etc that it would be worth it even to Reinsdork?? I mean we could dominate this division if we spent some money which I realize we won't do with dork in charge.
Chisoxfn
I really don't think him upping the payroll 20 mill would immediately bring it back. If the Sox were to produce and go to the series, then maybe it would...but even then I still think its a few year reclamation project to get Sox fans back. A few years AFTER Reinsdorf sells, then the Sox fans may come back.
