cwsox
I was at the local bar playing NTN (ask sox2k4) when the crawl on the bottom of the screen said Colon signed elsewhere. I thought since Sox offered arbitration, that wouldn't happen. My understanding of the rules or what took place is obviously flawed. Did Colon reject the arbitration offer thus making him free to sign elsewhere? Or is it something else that I missed or am wrong on?
Soxbadger
Arbitration seems to do this: If you offer arbitration you can continue to negotiate with your free agents and do not have to wait until May 11. A player can accept arbitration or find a better deal. If the player signs elsewhere and you offered arbitration, you get compensation based on his value. If the team has one of the 15 worst records you get a 2nd round pick and a 1st round sandwich pick, if the team has one of the 15 best records you get a 1st round pick and 1st round sandwich pick. There are plenty of other complications such as player ratings, etc. SB
Rex Hudler
I was at the local bar playing NTN (ask sox2k4) when the crawl on the bottom of the screen said Colon signed elsewhere. I thought since Sox offered arbitration, that wouldn't happen. My understanding of the rules or what took place is obviously flawed. Did Colon reject the arbitration offer thus making him free to sign elsewhere? Or is it something else that I missed or am wrong on? Colon was a free agent once he filed back in October..... The arbitration deadline is one where the original club must offer or decline to offer arbitration. If the original club fails to offer arbitration, it loses the right to negotiate with that player until May 1st. If they offer him, they can continue to negotiate with him until sometime in early January. The player can continue to negotiate with all clubs.... The player has until December 19 to either accept arbitration or reject it. If the player accepts, he is no longer a free agent and the club will either agree to a contract (most common) or go through the arbitration process. If the player declines, he continues to be a free agent. Whether a team offers arbitration or not determines whether the original team gets compensated for his loss. That whole process is a whole other thread.
cwsox
thanks, I have been educated, I appreciate it. After I read that news crawl, I must cinfess to being depressed and my NTN scores all fell about 1,000 to 2,000 points the rest of the evening. And I put off coming home because I didn't want to read about it. I am not even sure who he signed with, I just know he walked on us, the tub of goo club house troublemaker. For all that, I was amazed how sad I was when he was gone.
