The Critic
If the Sox sign Shawn Estes, I quit. I'm gone. I will NOT watch them for whatever length of time he is there. Sun-Times rumor-mongering that the Sox might pick up that worthless crapsack. It would serve me right, though, after laughing at his pathetic attempt at pitching for the Scrubs... Harry Chappas
Doug Padilla is a moron. O.K. I may be a moron if I am wrong here but didn't LA resign Alvarez and the Yanks sign Quantrill? These are the guys he had the Sox looking at. The paper also states that Kenny Rogers was too much money for the cub but the Sox are not mentioned in this. I wish there was an easier paper to read on the train. Konerko was on the cover of the Trib so I have to look around for it. Any help on that article would be appreciated, it talked about firstbase. Molto
why must everyone jump to conclusions? if they were to sign Estes, it would only be to a minor league deal. You act like the Sox are thinking of signing him to a three year, $30 million deal and inserting him as their #1. If anything, he will sign a minor league deal, a normal and harmless move. Texsox
Jumping to conclusions? That's a White Sox fans off season workout regiment. That's the big trade Hawk was talking about I'm not sure I like him breathing air in AAA and taking up a spot. I worry that KW is thinking he actually knew E-Lo was going to have a great 9/10 of a season. He might really be thinking he could pick the next one. Hey KW, a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while. You can't predict these things.
mreye
Why not? Our last former-Cub aquisitioin was a GREAT pickup!

I do not care what kind of contract they would sign him to. Signing that useless slag would be the ultimate concession that the Sox are going nowhere and do not WANT to go anywhere. If he threw with his right arm, he'd be throwing peanuts to customers in the stands.
Molto
I remember a couple years ago when Estes was a pretty solid pitcher and I remember a few times last season when Estes pitched some decent outings for the Cubs. signing him to a minor league deal wouldn't be the worst thing. The guy has shown he can pitch at the big league level. Will it work? most likely not, but you act as though he's never succeeded at all. And why would that prove they aren't interested in winning? Loaiza was signed last year to battle it out for the fifth spot. He wasn't given a spot in the rotation, and if Estes were to be signed, he wouldn't be given a job either, but a chance to win one. Not every move made is supposed to be a difference maker, and just because one isn't, doesn't mean it's a worthless move. Every team in baseball makes small trades and signings and some of them work out for the better. The Sox aren't the only ones.

BrandoFan
If it's a minor leaague-type deal, I see NOTHING wrong with Estes giving Rauch or Diaz or whomever else competition for 5th spot in rotation. After he started to throw Hampton-esque slider in on RHs, he was not all that bad. Still have a good curve and can spot his fastball. A good thrid pitch gave him confidence,
Chisoxfn
If you ask me signing Estes to a minor league deal is a good move. First off he's been a productive major league pitcher in his career and at one point was one of the top young pitchers in baseball. He hasn't showed that as of late, but the Sox aren't exactly giving him millions of dollars. Why not see what Coop can do.

Exactly, that kind of thinking of low risk/fairly large reward makes winning teams and dives them depth. If he busts ala Heredia did in ST 2003, then no big deal. If he suceeds (say, ERA under 4.50), then it will motivate Rauch to either bring it or sit down and give the Sox a solid 5th starter (after Parque-Ritchie-Wright-Porzio-Cotts disaster of last 2 years) for ONCE. In that case, I did a little jabbing when they signed Sirotka. I mean, his arm is fake and all and he hasn't really pitched in 3 years. That reminds me of what happened when the Bears picked up Kordell Stewart. I was sitting around with my buds talking s*** about him & how horrible he was & then one of the guys come up with a newspaper with a headline in the sports section that said the Bears got him. My mouth fell wide open, I got up and walked away.
Pastime
Never believe Doug Padilla. He wipes once during his morning s***, and the remaining stuff that comes out of his ass becomes his column. Estes should be doing nothing in baseball except sitting in someone's bullpen and coming in to face one weak left-handed hitter every 3 days. Even then I'm sure his ERA would be higher than the elevation of Pike's Peak.
