It appears the Toronto Blue Jays have strengthened their starting rotation.

The Toronto Sun reported Friday that the Blue Jays reached agreement with righthander Miguel Batista on a three-year contract worth $15 million.

The team has not confirmed the signing.

Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi negotiated with Batista's agent Martin Arburua on Thursday before leaving for the winter meetings in New Orleans.

Batista, 32, spent the last three seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks and is best known for pitching 7 2/3 scoreless innings in Game Five of the 2001 World Series against the New York Yankees. He pitched a career-high 193 1/3 innings last season and went 10-9 with a 3.54 ERA.

Ricciardi already has made two other pitching moves in the offseason, acquiring lefthander Ted Lilly from the Oakland Athletics and signing free agent Pat Hentgen. Batista would move into the rotation along with Lilly and Hentgen behind ace Roy Halladay, the American League Cy Young Award winner.

Yeah Kenny, we are really that broke in a small market city which is the 2nd biggest city in the United States...

What a f*****

Kenny does not control the payroll JR does. And also, although we are in a huge market the Sox don't take in enough money to have a large market payroll. Should it be higher than it is? Probably, but I don't expect ownership to be willing to lose millions of dollars. I hate it as much as anyone else, but its easy to play with other peoples money and say that they should sign anyone you want but its not that simple.

It turns out that Keeny made Batista an offer.  About the same money per year, but for 2 years when he got 3 from Toronto.

Seems like if we are offering enough money, we aren't offering enough years. Everybody is willing to (over)pay these free agents more than we are. Apparently it is a seller's market this year. I wouldn't be surprised if MLB has a lockout in the next couple seasons.

I don't blame the Sox.  You really don't know what Batista will turn into so they tried staying safe, making sure they didn't end up getting stuck.

Batista would of been a solid acquistion, but their is a lot out there still.

Agreed.
