These guys told us a whole lot of nothing. Its very obvious that the Sox have to make a big move, so that is nothing new. I think the guy that has to go is Maggs. I love Maggs, but he is the only player that addresses both needs.

1) Give the Sox some financial relief/flexibility.

2) The Sox can get something decent in return that will help them now and address a weakness.

We will have to wait and see though.

Maggs won't address both needs. If we dump salary we get a brick in return. If we pick up a player that can help, we get a big salary with it. No one will pick up Magg's and give us a quality, inexpensive player in return. :fthecubs

I am going to have to respectfully disagree. If you read carefully, than you will see that I say SOME FINANCIAL FLEXIBILITY/RELIEF. Now that doesn't nessarily mean that the Sox are going to get top young players AND save 12-13M. For example, one possibility might be Garcia and prospects for Maggs. In this example, the Sox would address one of their major weaknesses and save about 6-7M depending on how much Garcia gets through arbitration. That means that they would fullfil the two needs(fill hole and free money). If you follow any of the rumors floating around, you will notice that most include a big salary player that addresses a weakness, however, the Sox would still save a big chunk of change. Whether you didn't read/understand my post or you haven't been following the latest rumors/news it is pretty clear that trading Maggs will probably fill both needs, so you really shouldn't say stuff like, trading him won't address both needs, when that is far from certain/likely.

I'd rather just dump Magglio and see the Sox take their chances on getting Garcia after he's non tendered. I just don't see why the Sox should acquire Garcia unless they are willing to take on Konerko's contract. Otherwise just hold out till he gets non tendered.

And I do believe Maggs has value.

If Williams trades Magglio, he better be thinking along the lines of addressing both needs.  But, please, not for Garcia.  He's too much of a gamble, imo.

Right now there is only one viable trade I think the Sox could do and not get killed and thats Maggs for Soriano.

I don't care what anyone tells me about Soriano, he's a hell of a player, cheap, and is still very marketable. While the Sox lose Maggs, the free up a hell of a lot of money and they don't say they are giving up because Soriano is a young all star.

People can say oh we should get more in return for Maggs, but all I can say is if the Sox could some how pull this off, I'd be calling them geniuses because it would give the Sox more then enough room to add two pitchers, two relievers, and fill your other holes. Basically the Sox would be about 17 mill under budget. That allows for 10 mill on pitching, 4 mill on your two relievers and 3 mill to fill other holes. Thats just a rough estimate though.

But no I don't think it will happen, but its by far and away the only rumored Maggs deal that I'd do.

You don't trade your best player (Lee is good, but Maggs is still a machine at the plate) for crap in return, especially when he is young, a great guy, and well the organization can't afford negative PR and thats what would happen if you dealt him for prospects and I can't see any team willing to do that unless you eat a large chunk of his salary. The Yanks would be the only team out there willing to do that.

So I hope George tells Sheff to pound sand and the Sox and Yanks can work out that deal.

Just yesterday, I said the Sox would have to get more than Soriano. But, you have convinced me otherwise. Having said that, I believe the Sox COULD get more than Soriano from the Yanks.

The one thing I know is that Soriano has put up pretty much identical stats from the top of the order. Maggs does have a better OBP and fewer strikeouts while Soriano steals more bases. Soriano could become the best player in the majors. And he would fill a need if the Sox stuck him at 2nd, although he does have defensive woes.

Either way you stick Reed/Harris/Rowand in center and sign Encarnacion or Jay Payton for cheap and stick them in right and you have your outfield. You get Soriano and Encarnacion for Magglio.

Then move Koch for Weathers (ITS GONNA HAPPEN FOLKS, I stick by this). You clear an additional 3 mill. And the Sox work in a Konerko deal (Eventually I Think they can move him) and replace him with Thomas at first and look for another bat for cheap. Plenty of solid vet bats will be out there...or you could go with Spiezo, or if Palmerio has to take a lot less him.

And the key is bring in one more pitcher to go with whoever you acquire for Konerko.

Oh well, enough of me speculating, but their are a lot of possibilities out there. All depends how the Sox want to work it, but moving Maggs for Soriano would give them a hell of a lot of options.
