suffering-nomore-sox fan
Strange that the Akron paper would be the only one to report this. Let's hope it is true. http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/sports/7494647.htm
Queen Prawn
Steff - do you know anything about this? Can you lend credance to this story or do you know if they printed it before anything was final?
southsider2k5
The Akron-Beacon Journal out scooping the Chicago media empire...

Chisoxfn
Weird...you'd think that be linked somewhere. I've only seen the NY times and now this even report that the Sox had made an offer. Maybe it is a deal they will announce in a few days, after they move Ordonez???
Gene Honda Civic
Say it aint so, say it aint so. on a side note what are you doing reading the Akron-Beacon Journal?
Queen Prawn
Maybe it is a deal they will announce in a few days, after they move Ordonez??? I guess that is a possibility, but why wait? At this point in time the Sox need to start getting some positive PR and this would definitely be a start...
Steff
I haven't talked to him since the 9th when he told me that he was likely going back to Baltimore - which was reported all over the place this weekend in Baltimore. He's in Baltimore right now. I left a message and I'll let you know if I hear anything.
Guest JimH
Hey, Akron Ohio man, that's where the rubber hits the road Akron nickname: Blimp City ... the Goodyear Blimp, get it? They have, or had, a really nice brewpub in Akron called Blimp City Brewing Co. Now, back to your regularly scheduled rumor mongering. Molto
this signing, if true, would put the Sox' projected 2004 salary at close to $70 million.

Steff
subtracting Maggs salary put it at $56 MIL --- HMMMMMM... do I see a move coming in the future. Something is going to happen... I just don't see it being this. Baltimore (reportedly) offered him more than this. They just improved themselves a lot with Tejada signed, I-Rod and Vlad both getting offers. They seem to be legit on contending. Although, they do have to set a limit at some point. They have a huge advantage in that Sid already has roots there. As of the 9th he was happy with what looked like was going to happen.. doesn't mean something didn't change. Personally.. as much as I'd love to have him here - it would save me a TON of $$ on tickets , I don't want to see him treated like s***. I have all the faith in the world that the Sox would do just that..

I'm on the record for a long ways back as being against signing this guy.... Ponson = Garland, and no one's going to offer jonny boy $6MIL a year.... Well, Kenny has said a few times as of late that he doesn't have to trade guys. I think JR wants him to but he isn't set on that.

I think that is more bluster so that teams aren't trying to take advantage of us. JR knows if he said we HAVE to trade guys it hurts our trade leverage. Steff
I just want to go on record here as saying that I think Maggs is staying put. And that the payroll will be more than $58 million. Although.. I sat in the 30 degree weather at the Bears game yesterday.. so I am suffering from stupidity at this time.
The_Godfather
I will have to hear something from a more proven source before really getting excited about anything but that sox have been wanting this guy for sometime now and the way they do things all undercover and s*** him signing wouldnt shock me. quickman
Folks, If I am the GM I secure the needs of the team first. That said if he thinks he needs pitching then great go get him. Then trade away a larger salary if needed later, i.e Koch and so on. I also beleive our payroll might be larger than reported. I never saw KW say our payroll is 58 million. I only saw reports to that effect. With that in mind the sox could look like geniouses saying they are willin gto add payroll. Also, I do think if we sign ponson we will indeed trade somebody. With that said, I would also assume it would be for players with very low payroll or High end minor leaguers. My opinion only.

And it was a good game and a victory yesterday, that's not stupidity. I've been to Lambeau in much colder to watch the bears get thier butts kicked. Now that's stupidity.
