Everett signs with Expos

AP NewsBreak: Everett agrees to contract with Expos

By RONALD BLUM, AP Sports Writer

December 15, 2003

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- All-Star outfielder Carl Everett agreed Monday to a contract with the Montreal Expos that guarantees him $7 million over the next two seasons, The Associated Press learned.

The deal was to be announced later Monday. Details were confirmed by a pair of baseball officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Everett, 33, hit .287 last season with 28 homers and 92 RBIs for the Texas Rangers after they acquired him from the Chicago White Sox on July 1.

His contract with the Expos calls for a $3 million salary in 2004. Everett has a $4 million player option for 2005. If he exercises it, Montreal would get a $5 million team option for 2006 with a $500,000 buyout.

He earned $9.15 million last season, when he became an All-Star for the second time.

Everett is a .278 career hitter in 11 frequently turbulent seasons, including stints with the Florida Marlins, New York Mets, Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox.

Tampa Bay also made an offer to Everett last week.

Montreal needed an outfielder to replace Vladimir Guerrero, who became a free agent. The Expos didn't offer him salary arbitration Dec. 7, meaning he cannot re-sign with Montreal until May 1.

Everett was an All-Star his first season in Boston after being traded from Houston, hitting .300 with 34 homers and 108 RBIs in 2000. But he was also suspended for 10 days after he exploded in fury and head-butted umpire Ron Kulpa.

After numerous arguments with Red Sox managers Jimy Williams and Joe Kerrigan, Everett was traded to Texas at the 2001 winter meetings.

We wouldn't give him 3-4 million a year?

The two stooges in the front office better be cooking up something real nice.

The Problem is that if the SOX would have offered Salary Arb. to him he would ahve accepted and came for more money. The only way the Sox could have signed him them was after May 1st

Thats a good signing for the Expos. He's a great guy with a great attitude. In his short time with the Sox he become one of my favorites and I'll always root for him, except when he plays with the Sox.

Its too bad the Sox couldn't of had him here, cause he would of been a fine replacement for Magglio (if he gets dealt).

There is one BIG reason.  You can resign your own players for less than 80% of what they were making, under the CBA.  In other words if Carl made $8 mil last year, we couldn't go under $6.2 for 2004.

I thought that was only if we took him to arbitration. But that clause in the arbitration agreement would of prevented it. The only way the Sox could of done it is if Everett declined arbitration and the Sox then worked out that kind of deal.

Or I guess Everett could of already known his market and accepted a Sox offer without the Sox offering him arbitration (They would of had to do that by the 7th of December).

Basically it would of been possible to do it for less, but highly unlikely.

And it wasn't just the base salary, He is guarenteed $7.5 million.

Carl Evrett is exactly the type of player we could have replaced Maggs with (assming Maggs is dealt for pitching talent not just given away)

Everett is making 10.5 Mill less, is only 1.5 years older, runs as well as Maggs and would probably be as solid in RF and can probably drive in 90-100 runs in a year. The the extra 10-15 runs Maggs drives in would be more than covered by the 10.5 Mill spent on a true ace. Plus what you get from Maggs trade (say, Soraino if Sheffiled stiffs them)

True,

They could have worked out a deal prior to arbitration

We'll miss ya Carl. Actually the deal can be for 3 years as well. The Expos pursued him heavily because his former hitting coach with the Mets and Astros is now the hitting coach of the Expos. From ESPN,

Everett's complex contract will pay him either $3 million for one year, $7.5 million for two seasons or $12 million for three years. He receives a $3 million salary in 2004 and a $4 million player option for 2005. If he exercises it, Montreal would get a $5 million team option for 2006 with a $500,000 buyout.
