C.Rector
Just a few hours ago, on Julie Swieka's show on WSCR, she was ranting about football players celebrating in the end zone saying that all fans don't like it, just as if she spoke for all of us. Well, a caller made the points that he (A) liked seeing players celebrating touchdowns and (B) was tired of folks dumping on black players for celebrating in the end zone, but not doing the same about white guys doing the same. Well, Swiecka got angry with him and terminated his call. Later, I got to thinking about Swiecka's thin-skinnedness with the caller especially in the light of the way that she's conducted her show in the past. For instance, when white pitchers such as Mark Buehrle or Jon Garland or even Danny Wright were pulled out early from a game, Swiecka tended to minimize it by saying that well, nobody's perfect. However, if a Hispanic pitcher such as Bartolo Colon or Esteban Loaiza got pulled out, then she really rode on them. This was especially true with Loaiza who she frequently ran down and claimed was overrated and going to become a bust at any time now. Whenever white players such as Graffanino, Crede or Konerko screwed up either in the field or in GIDP's or by swinging for the bleachers when going for a plain old hit would have been the better option, she either didn't mention it or just said that they had a bad day, no big deal. However, when a minority player such as Lee, Ordonez or (especially) Thomas messed up, she had no mercy on them. The same goes for coaches. When Cartwright was still around, she frequently wondered aloud if he wasn't stupid because, for instance, he didn't have 2 certain players on the floor at the same time. She just continually ran him down for being a losing coach. However, she has yet to say anything even remotely critical about Scott Skiles even though he has a losing record thus far. Although its true that she has been critical of both Dick Jauron and John Shoop, that ciriticism pales in contrast to the abuse that she's heaped on the likes of Greg Blache, Dusty Baker and Jerry Manuel. The same also goes for White Sox GM Kenny Williams and his Cubs counterpart Jim Hendry. Lately, she's been just gushing all over Hendry saying that he's been really active and is continually on the cell phone talking to other GM's. OTOH, she's been riding herd on KW, claiming that he's been lazy and doing nothing, making the Sox, "dead in the water." Actually, as visitors to this forum know, KW has been continually on the phone talking to, among others, Dodgers GM Dan Evans. Granted, outside of the Uribe trade (that Swiecka has hardly even acknowledged thus far), KW has not finalized any deals as of yet, however given the way that KW has conducted these negotiations, it appears that he's mastered the art of trading. That being the case, its quite possible that KW may very well pull off a blockbuster trade. If so, it will be very interesting to see if she gives KW the kind of credit and praise that she's heaped on Hendry. All of this is interesting since the Cubs have indicated that they're not interested in any more trades while KW keeps plugging away while Swiecka claims that he's nothing but lazy. Is it really a coincidence that KW is black while Hendry is white and there's a longstanding racist belief that blacks are shiftless and lazy? Has anyone else here noticed this? YASNY
I know this much. To label somebody a racist, or even to imply it, based on your perceptions ... as nothing more than an outsider, is, to put succinctly... WRONG.
Queen Prawn
However, if a Hispanic pitcher such as Bartolo Colon or Esteban Loaiza got pulled out, then she really rode on them. This was especially true with Loaiza who she frequently ran down and claimed was overrated and going to become a bust at any time now. I don't listen to much sports radio (more in the summer, but not much in the other seasons except college football time), too annoying. But I had to comment on the above comment. People started to expect from Loaiza after the first month or so - so to ride him was out of pure frustration because of the higher expectations. Colon should have been ridden when pulled early - that fat f*** didn't earn the cash he got last year, he rarely gave 100% out there, or so it seemed. Garland hasn't been much yet so there really is no expectation there, it doesn't surprise anyone when he is pulled. After Buehrle's start this season, I think expectations on him fluctuated from none to a bunch by the end of the year. But that is just my opinion. Also, does this have to do with the fact that the announcer is a woman rather than a man? The things you mentioned are regularly talked and b****ed about by male announcers. All that aside, if you don't like her (which seems to be the case), why listen? Turn off the radio or change the station until her show is over. BrandoFan
Rector, you're WAY off base. Julie is just very awkward, inexperienced and not very good at articulating her views...and OF COURSE that the cell-phone celebtration s*** is ridiculous, is it her fault majority of NFL Wideouts are Black? Give me a break, you got a TRUE racist/controversy merchant Mike North reigning as the highest paid sports personality in the mid-west with total impunity....while Awkward Julia and brillant Dan Bernstein are the ones who have to ward off ham-handed racist accusations....Puh-lease. However, she has yet to say anything even remotely critical about Scott Skiles even though he has a losing record thus far. Skiles is TWICE the coach Cart is, and if you can't see the difference in play/attitude you're blind. Cart's team was blown out in most losses, while Skiles, without his best power-forward AND without HOF Pipper, had his team in EVERY game. PS If I recall, Julia was Jerry Maneul and Dusty Baker's biggest supporter during the year when half the callers were ripping on them for one thing or another....hw convenient to leave it out? Is it really a coincidence that KW is black while Hendry is white and there's a longstanding racist belief that blacks are shiftless and lazy? Has anyone else here noticed this? Don't jump on somebody when what they say makes sense. You and the caller are off base. 1) While she may have been wrong to generalize, a lot of people including myself think it is stupid to show up an opponent by pulling out a cell phone. No matter his color. How would Horn have felt if Will Allen put a big hit on horn and then made a phone call? 2) She never said "I don't like it when black people celebrate in the endzone". Here in NY, fans get all over Jeremy Shockey for celebrating too much after every play. Many callers say he should be fined for being a hot head. Jeremy Shockey is White by the way, so there goes the judgement based on race. 3) Mark Buehrle and Jon Garland are both under 25, Wright was coming off some arm problems in the spring. They don't have the saavy to go 8 or 9 every game. Colon on the other hand is a horse who went the distance a lot last year. So when a pitcher making a large sum of money to swallow innings only lasts 6, it is disappointing. As for Loiaza, it was frustrating to see a guy be dominating yet throw 100 pitches in 5 or 6 innings at the same time. 4) Anybody that gets on Grafanino's ass for not being clutch needs to know that Grafanino is a utility infielder, not a crucial part of our offense. As for Konerko, I doubt that she went easy on the guy, I think you maybe generalizing. (granted, I live in NJ and have never heard our show, I know that even prejudiced people won't go easy on someone because they are white). 5) Look at what skiles walked into, and look at the amount of time he has been there. The change is going to occur overnight. I am not trying to put down you belief here or anything, afterall everyone is titled to an opinion. I just find that you can't accuse someone or a society of being completely racist without looking at the whole picture.
